Has a disassembled older J35 vtec v6 with it. Need another older J35 - older to me means has typical headers (3 separate exhaust ports) but way more newer “single” exhaust port engines for sale out there. So many in fact that the older ones aren’t readily available, have a free “newer” style v6 for the pickings.

Couple questions:
1. Any idea where to find an older-style J35 v6?
2. Anyone ever see a newer-style baja or buggy exhaust headers?

Rich, not my area of expertise but I believe that was the engine in my 2001 Honda Odyssey (J35A). My apologies if I'm wrong as I'm going by memory. Most of these older Odysseys (the "tranny bomb" generations) end up in the salvage yards because of the defective design of Honda transmissions that fail on a regular basis. We got rid of our 2001 Odyssey for salvage value with <120K on the engine when it needed its third transmission. My point is that you have a good shot at getting a decent engine from an Odyssey at the self service salvage yards as many of them are there not because the engine failed but because the transmission failed. I just checked Pick-n-Pull in Richmond and they have 11 in the yard right now, including one put out just three days ago. Might be worth a look. I also see these frequently on CL as a "mechanic's special" because the transmission has failed, so you could potentially buy a whole vehicle for <$1K if. you wanted to. If I remember correctly the years of the bad transmission were from 99-06. Good luck!

We had an '01 Odyssey, was told by my dad (the original owner, that it had 3 trannys replaced under warranty during huis ownership. We put 90K on it (130K total) before the tranny went out and e donated it.

Our current 2006 Odyssey has 255K on its original drive train, still goes strong like a new car. Engine burns about a qt every 5Kmi, when I change the engine oil. 10Kmi trans fluid changes.

Jeff, glad to hear your '06 Odyssey is going strong! Sounds like your '01 had about the typical amount of mileage on it before they get junked. Our Odyssey's transmission failed just barely outside of the warranty period. Well within the mileage limits, but a few months outside of the time limit. Honda wouldn't budge and we ended up paying for a new transmission. When it failed again ~60K later we junked the van, even though it was in great shape otherwise. Those transmissions failed regularly around the 40-60K mark. It was always the second (or maybe third?) gear that burned out due to poor fluid flow. I remember when it happened the second time I did a lot of research on what might be causing it and someone on one of the boards had hypothesized that the filtering screens on the solenoids were clogging up and restricting fluid flow. Not easy to get to, and not a listed maintenance item, but that sure made sense. Some other people confirmed that they found this to be true. I've always wanted to pull one off a car in the salvage yard to see for myself if that was the problem. I think changing the trans fluid frequently is a great idea, and if I still had that van I'd probably pull the second gear solenoid regularly to clean the filtering screen. Wish I had done that back then. I'm not sure that your '06 has the same issue. I think they may have fixed it by then. When the CVT transmission on my 2001 CNG Civic failed after less than 60K miles, also well under the warranty mileage limit for the transmission but outside of the time limit, I junked that car as well and have not, and will not, ever buy a Honda again. Both warranty periods for the Civic as well as the Odyssey had been extended as a result of class action lawsuits. I went back and forth with Honda over this for a while, but they wouldn't budge, not even a discount on the part. We have Toyotas now. They have been defect free.

Ok, don’t care about all the transmissions & the accompanying yarns. THANK YOU for updating me about the pic n pull but I prefer to buy from a boutique supplier who doesn’t want me coming back to drop off junk stuff until a good one is sourced.

Going to see what Pic n Pull has - man, wish I knew about the pic n pull inventory - Gold!
