I recently posted that my friend ( an experienced mechanic) has agreed to help me drop the motor in my 74 with 1.7L (yes not original) but running motor and do a refresh..

I'm about to pull the trigger on an order to the tune of about $1400

I wanted to share it and see what other suggestions and parts we should have from the start, I'm sure we will find things we need after the motor is out but for now here is this list..

Just buy a gasket set instead of individual pieces. Go to Rockauto, prices a whole lot better.

Don't know what you are looking to spend $1400 on. Get it out and see what you really need. Looks like you may be pricing with AA which is usually the hi⁵ghest priced supplier.

Slippery slope. Lots of threads on what to do while the engine is out. Engine mounts, transmission mounts, CV joints spring to mind.

Thanks for the info, I want to have most of the basics covered there on site before we start, rather then take it out and see..

There will be some of that see what we need, after the motor is out. I just wanted the basics to get started. and as far as ordering from places like rock auto I'm always afraid if getting just cheap replacement parts that are either German made or are higher quality..

Almost all replacement parts are now made in China, Mexico, or East Bloc counties regardless of where you buy from or any perceived price premium from a particular vendor.

RockAuto is upfront about who the supplier is.

Try to buy seals from known quality vendors
SKF (highly preferred)
Timken
Victor Reinz
Shaeffler
Cardone (OK in my experience but less preferred)

Since I have done this now 3 times, I would do the following

1. Is your mechanic friend a VW/Porshe mechanic? If not he will have a learning curve
2. Oil leaks - chase them all
PushRod Tube seals
Oil Cooler Seals (VERY IMPORTANT)
Front and rear - you already had this
Oil Pressure gauge - always leaks at the seal
Transmission Seals (any 1st or 2nd grinding? replace dog teeth)
- Engine coupling seal
- Shift Rod Seal
-trans-axle seals (if leaking)
- transmission Vent - needs to be at 200degrees from North (front is north) or this is a huge source of tranny oil all over you garage - ask me how I know.....
3. Air leaks - vacuum
Make certain since you have the engine out that the Plenum is 100% sealed and that the manifold cloth connectors are very tight and do not leak

All of the other stuff is ok, yes, get a complete Renz or similar kit. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif)

As to AA and Pelican - they will talk to you and they REALLY know these cars, so it becomes what you are in need of and the service you may expect.

Last, buy the 700 things book from AA, I found it to be an excellent reference in many things that should be looked at when this car is apart,

Last, dirty work - wear gloves.......grin (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Happy Fourth! - (IMG:style_emoticons/default/flag.gif)
