I've been in talks for a couple weeks with a local who's trying to buy my finished project car. He wants to have it picked up and taken to a local shop (who supposedly does Porsche race builds, etc). I don't really know the buyer that well, besides meeting him when he first came to see the car and test drive it (seems like an honest character). I have the title and I'll keep that until the actual sale, but what steps should be taken to insure nothing nefarious takes place? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

Consider taking it to the PPI shop yourself and staying there, drive it home. Or maybe ask the buyer to take possession of it immediately after the PPI is accepted. Even after an acceptable PPI, buyer would need to trust that you do not do anything to the car, his taking immediate possession eliminates that and you get paid faster.

Nope. He can have a mechanic come to my house and do a supervised inspection. I would not want someone messing with my car blindly, specially after doing all that work to it.

If it was a shop I knew and trusted... I'd drive it there, let him pay for the PPI, and drive it back home an hour later with a copy for my time in case he backs out.

He came to test drive the car, just before he left for an out of country vacation. Had a list of items he wanted addressed before taking possession - which was denied, but agreed price was slightly altered at that point.

I can not drive the car to PPI, cause it's not registered etc.

The shop is resisting coming here for the PPI (I've no garage and it's 90+ out, so I kind of get it).

Doug, do you have it insured.... I'm with Jeff and Chris, take it there even if you have to rent a trailer and buyer can pick up. The shop is liable to you if anything happens. Best, Mark

Chances are the car doesn’t currently have insurance on it. Most shops have insurance on the building and maybe the equipment. They don’t typically carry insurance that covers damage to your car. If they test drive your car, mis a shift and trash your engine, you don’t really have real protection. More like a hope and a prayer they will admit it’s their fault and fix the issue. Good luck with that.
Have him pay you for the car. He can take it to the shop. If he passes, you give the money back. If it’s damaged, he owns it no matter what.
If it’s not a really good offer, I would just pass and wait on a different buyer.
When I sell a car, I don’t give away possession of the car until I get paid.

Rent a trailer, get the car to the shop, stay there until they're done with their PPI, bring the car back home, have the prospect buyer pay for everything.

Once you take your eyes off the car you lose control. Have potential buyer arrange for a round-trip flat bed and go with or follow the driver with a one hour inspection window.

Have the potential buyer arrange a PPI within a reasonable distance and supply his CC info for billing with an agreement you get a complete copy of the PPI report. Have him rent the trailer, or better yet, if you have road service, have it flat-bedded, and you take the car to the PPI shop and remain with it while they inspect it. Do not let them drive it; if necessary, you drive it with their mechanic, around the block so they can see it shifts, brakes, steers, etc.
