70 914-6 - all original

All,

I purchased two NOS cables - throttle and clutch.

The throttle and clutch cables are still in the car - I was thinking of typing a string to each - pull them out and then use the string to pull them back through to avoid getting them wrapped around something.

Any advice as to this process? Asking those that have done this wrong in the past (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

I just did both on my 72-4 cyl. I did not tie anything to the ends and both came
in and out easily. I think you risk having the string catch on something so I just went without anything. The one tool I would recommend is a flexible grab tool. This gives you a way to grab the end down by the pedals and pull it towards you to add the locking
Nut and clevis. Leave the other ends just hanging so you can pull the cables to do the end installs. The clutch cable I got was about 3/4 of an inch longer… so I cheated more on the pedal end for the clutch. The accelerator was ok. I shot some wd40 at the pedal pivot points and greased all the lever points while I was in there. Everything is silky smooth now.

I used fishing line, super-glued the two so there was no knot.

A couple flashlights and an inspection mirror are very helpful. Do the throttle cable first and pull the slack out the front, then do the clutch cable. This way the throttle cable won’t get wrapped around the clutch cable.

If you have budget for a borescope, it will be very helpful. One with a light on the end and the ability to display live video as well as take photos in particular. They start at $50 and you will use it more than you think. Some more expensive ones have both front and side-view cameras.

Here is a shot from the gas pedal looking rewards in the tunnel of our 1970 914-6.
