914-6, 1970 - all original, good compression and leak down - was running very good prior to taking the engine out for gasket replacements and thorough cleaning.

All,

Trying to get this car started - what would you suggest?

For details as to what has been done up until now, please see this thread:

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...=373371&hl=

Got the engine in, spilled gas and oil, forgot to tighten the drain plug.....and so it goes.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

No oil or gas leaks (or no more)

Got the engine cranking and assured that there was a spark - there is - and that each carb has gas - accel pumps are squirting and calibrated. Look good

I watched a few times two videos on the topic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwwMn1KxjqQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrGH9e52o1c

Soo,

It cranks, no galloping, Cylinder #5 is popping a few times.....nothing else,

I did set the timing and the dwell, used the Position of the rotor at TDC to start the timing position. Just like the video above......

I Squirted both sides with a few pulls of the accelerator pumps and also opened the throttle and held it open.

No Start.

Did not want to over work the starter, what would you advise as my next moves?

Thank you Teeners!

Sure sounds like timing/dizzy orientation and/or spark plug routing isn’t correct.

Lots of assumptions built into that statement - ie you have compression, haven’t messed with cam timing, valves adjusted properly, carbs adjusted properly for an initial start.

But I’m going with that first answer for now.

Confirm TDC #1 by checking clearance at both rocker arms OR blow into # 1 with a compression tester hose after removing the shrader valve.
IF you CAN blow in and the rotor points to the #1 wire the dizzy is 180 degrees out.
Did you loosen the timing adjustment clamp to remove it the dizzy or did you remove the 13mm nut and lift the dizzy out with the clamp still tight ?
Your flywheel is marked for TDC (twice per cycle) and can be seen through the window at the top of the bellhousing...at rear of eng. compartment.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) I didn't really do any of that reference stuff ,I set up the engine before fitting to the car when i had the rocker covers off after checking valves twice.
I didn't keep the clamp on when removing the dizzy to fit Pertronix, that was a minor fail but sorted that .
First setup was ok but not right , moved the dizzy one tooth ,rotated engine whilst watching valve TDC on #1, appeared fine , this was an engine that had been not used for a long time, primed up oil pressure and it started first time ,what a day that was.
Clearly an ignition timing issue in your case cause you are very much 180 out ,cheers.
