Are both sides of the blower control unit meant to illuminate?

I pulled ours out to clean and lubricate it. I could only find one wire with a bulb under the dash and it was plugged into the right side blue lens. Is that correct? There are two lenses, so I'd expect to find two bulbs.

If there is only one bulb, I'd expect it to go in the left red side. The car only has heat, no air. The owner's manual makes no mention of the lights. Just the sliders.

Thanks for your help with my never ending stream of questions. I seem to fix one thing, then find two more that need attention... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

AFAIK only the blue lamp to indicate the blower fan is on.
Later cars could be different ... ?

Thanks for the confirmation. I wonder why the other red lens then. Oh well. One less thing to chase.

red lens might have been for the 911s? i dunno, don't have a 911. but the 914 just used the 911 heater slide controls and maybe did not have that bulb activated. all i can think.

mine only illuminates with the fresh air blower fan when it comes on as you slide the top control right. no bulb in left side. but mine is a 74. handbook only mentions the right side light comes on in a 4 with the blower fan as well.

How do you get to the bulb? Does the whole unit pull out, or is access from underneath the dash?

This is the same question I have . I think the whole unit has to be pulled. On my car (76) which has the center console gauges I found a string of three small lamps ,since the gauges all had lamps wasn't sure where they went . My high beam indicator doesn't work so I figured they went to the dash lamps but now I know they go to the fresh air controls . They do not work so maybe PO was trying to fix them and that is why they are pulled out. I want to get new bulbs and install them back in the control panel. So I too want to know how to remove the control panel so I don't break something .

The pumpkin (1970)does not have a center console. I get to those by laying across seats sort of and get head in position so I can see under dash. Flashlight helps.

actually i just been for a drive in my car and the heater controls are nothing like the manual, which the lazy germans did not bother updating. and said manual is what i referred to in answer above.

there is no red or blue illuminated section in a 74. it is just symbols. word fan.
and symbol of a fan on the other side.
and nothing lights up when you operate the sliders.
but it all lights up when you switch on the lights. as white light.

germans!!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif)
