Anybody use the Rennline seat mount? Not sure where I want to put a fire extinguisher, but this looks like a neat solution without making holes. Any pics of other mounting places appreciated. On my last 914 I just kept it behind my seat!

I went with the Element extinguisher. They are are very small footprint, can mount anywhere. Also put out any type of fire without leaving a mess at all. From what they advertise, it last 3 times longer than a typical pull and squeeze type. Even comes with the mounting clip. I measured it and it will fit beautifully under either seat.

The only "miracle" fire extinguisher I've seen used was a Halon. I bought one the next day (30years ago). Purple K is similar.

Due to enviromental costs they have gotten expensive and I'm not completely sure it's the same stuff.

This is a possibility I'd look into on Amazon.

They couldn't completely outlaw them due to the needs of the avaition crowd (I believe) but they wanted to.

Halon is a type of refrigerant...

It displaces the oxygen (big time!) and also goes through a phase change from liquid to gas which absorbs HEAT like a mofo.

I believe that it is by far the best way to put out a gasoline fire hands down.

It's INSTANTANEOUS!

I read differing opinions/reviews on the Element. What made me decide against it was looking at a car that had a fire and hearing that the Element the previous owner had used to try to put out the fire didn't make a dent in the flames. They used two of them but still ended up losing the fight. It is currently in new hands and undergoing a restoration. I ended up with Ben's FE mount (I actually ended up buying three of them) and a 5lb purple K FE. Ben's mount accommodated the larger FE. I'm not sure 2.5lbs is enough to put out a fire on the verge of becoming fully involved. 5lbs might not do it either, but it gives me a better chance. The heavier FE does cause the mount to "bounce" a bit when driving, but not too much. It doesn't impede on the passenger's leg room. Just a great and economical solution. I hope he decides to make more. Obviously the best strategy is prevention, but you still have to be prepared.

The challenge for Halon is dispersal. It works best in confined or enclosed spaces.

Sorry if I miss led anyone, I’ve never used the Element before. There is always the hope you never have to use an extinguisher. This is why I went through the entire electrical system when I bought it and also replaced all the fuel lines and connections with a fittings and braided stainless to give me the best chance. The car was a literal ticking time bomb when I bought it for the PO. The people that worked on it for him had moved the battery to the front because of the Hell hole rot, and also put in a new fuel pump. They didn’t even mount the fuel pump to the chassis and it had 5 hose clamps in about a 7 inch space! And the worst part of it all, is they zip tied the fuel lines to the battery cable underneath the Fuel Tank!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif)

There is a great technical discussion on fire extinguishers on the 356 forum with details from a member who ran a LAB and researched Halon replacements for years. I think you can view even if not a subscriber.

It's also interesting to read the further comments...

There it is, IN PRINT!

Just begging for Mr. Murphy to kick him in the nuts.

When the car is on fire the cost of the extinguisher is not what is important! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ninja.gif)


Edit: The way the Halon works I believe would allow it to be sprayed on the closed engine cover through the grill and still work fine. It is substantially heavier than air and in stock 4 or 6 form the engine compartment is a well-sealed off box.
Might be a good idea to spray some under the car too...

Yes, Halon for us.

When your car's on fire, you want something that works (especially if it's in your garage, which could burn down the house and all our other cars in it). Saw the element extinguisher videos and was convinced they had issues.

And, while the ones that shoot a dry chemical do work, they leave an awful mess to clean up. Had to cleanup after two dry chemical extinguishers and it took hours. And that wasn't the fire repair, just the baking soda gets into everything.

Get Halon ones, you'll be happier.

Hold your breath

I have halon in multiple cars.
And a friend was on grid. Someone helping him when a carb caught on fire pulled the bottle switch

He passed out inside the car before they he could get out of quick release belts. Had to be drug out of the car while it was still on fire. Got burned even while he was passed out.
Was a 914/6 race car. Burned to the ground

The trick with halon is to pull you belts and while exiting pull the release while holding your breath

car must be stopped to keep the breeze from washing the halon out and dispersing it.

Thought I should have posted about the limitations of Halon...

Brant just showed ONE of the drawbacks!

And this isn't Halon specific, it's refrigerant specific!

Most refrigerants are heavier than air, lots heavier.

I trace leaks from below in my business.

Most are oxygen dispersal agents.

You CANNOT tell you are not breathing when you're in a cloud of refrigerant but you're NOT!

It's supposed to be one of the least painful ways to commit suicide...

1 Don't breathe within the cloud.

Burning refrigerant makes dreadful chemicals. Burning R12 makes phosgene gas!
I don't think Halon and R134 are quite the same, but I don't give a shit; not breathing any of them.

2 Don't breathe at all until you are well away from the burn and upwind if possible!

Liquid refrigerants normally go through a rapid phase change to a gas when exposed to atmospheric pressure. With R134 it can create a temperature drop of 100+ degrees. It is MORE dangerous than fire to human flesh.
Almost instantaneous frost bite!

3 Don't get any liquid on you AT ALL!

Halon is the cats-pajamas! No powder, residue or liquid. Extinguish the fire, fix the fuel leak and drive away!
It is, however a chlorinated hydrocarbon made from recycled refrigerant (r-12, r-22 etc.) and a highly ozone depleting chemical.

I have the Rennline custom seat mount in my 911, but did not see one for the 914, so I went with this one for the 914:

I have the same quick release mount in the 911, so I can easily swap the tanks between cars if needed (although I do have an extinguisher in each).

For the extinguishers themselves, I went with H3R Halguard Halotron 1:

The true Halon extinguishers they sell (Halguard Pro) aren't that much more expensive than the Halotron, but a concern was that if I ever need to re-fill it down the road, that the price of Halon may be extremely high by then - if available at all. And based on what I've read, you can't refill a Halon bottle with Halotron. However, according to the chart on the page below, the discharge range for Halon is 50% greater than Halotron - so that's certainly something to consider.

I did a Rennline Universal mount about 5 years ago... takes only some minor modification to work on 914 stock seat rails, had to narrow down the aluminum sleeves that make up the post between the mounts but that was fairly easy. My seats are obviously not stock but they use the stock rails so this should work in a normal set up.

I carry a 2.5# Halon as well as an Element next to the drivers door...but after seeing that video posted in the thread I really question the Element, but more is always better!
