I posted this on another Porsche forum but thought I would share it here. I've done thousands of miles of travel from coast to coast and have come up with some good rules for keeping cars, parts, and equipment safe. As a result of these rules I've never had anything stolen while on the road, so these rules work. Feel free to add any that have worked for you.
1. Never stay at a hotel in a big city. If you're view from your hotel room doesn't look like a cornfield or a highway, you're in the wrong hotel. This means you have to stay either an hour before a big city or an hour out from a big city. No one is scouring the parking lots in the middle of nowhere to steal stuff, they're all asleep. 2. Never drop your trailer at the hotel to go to dinner or see the sights, stay on mission, order food to the hotel or eat within walking distance, this isn't a vacation, you're working. 3. Have a low key truck and trailer setup, if it looks like you have something valuable you're doing it wrong. Case in point. I recently transported this engine across the country. I deliberately used recycled wood and rusty metal to close it. What's the engine worth, far more then the rig carrying it, but no one needs to know that. 4. Always pre-book your hotel before the trip, that way you can do a satellite image and street view of the hotel before you get there, for a couple of reasons. The first that their parking lot is trailer friendly, the second that the area looks safe. By pre-booking you're not making the decision when you're tired and just want to stop. 5. Park at the hotel where you feel safe, and yes that means taking up five spaces right up front, not all the way in the back. If the hotel has a problem, they will tell you, but no one has ever told me to move. One time I didn't like the look of the parking lot, a group of homeless guys squatting over a burning 50 gallon drum were eye-balling me, there wasn't another hotel for about 40 miles so I paid the lady at the front desk $20 to park under the marquee of the hotel. She said for $20 I could park anywhere I wanted! 6. Cover your load if possible, tarp the back of the truck if you can. It's one thing for someone to look and grab your winch, it's another for someone to cut straps and remove a tarp. 7. Same with a padlock on your enclosed trailer, a lock keeps an honest man honest. 8. Try to get a hotel room where you can see the truck and trailer, it doesn't always work but the hotel people don't seem to care where they put you most of the time. Like I said, please add any rules you've come up with, this keeps everyone safer. Attached thumbnail(s) |

While we all are proud of our “ treasures”, I resisted urge to call out a Porsche was in the trailer. ……..
