My engine builder, Chuck Allard is building a windshield-less 914 racer and wanted to know where to get a rear view mirror for it.

@callard

Thanks, he’ll probably chime in here.

The Vitaloni mirror is a good period-correct option. Another option is a Spa Design center mirror. Pegasus sells them. I have this mirror on my open top 914.

Tell Chuck to ask Chris what he did on his car. After all, he bought the windscreen from Chris...

Chris had the Vitaloni on top and on the left side. I want better vision directly to the rear. I'll contact Pegasus. Thanks for the pointer.
BTW, after 7 months, I'm finally able to post here. Woo hoo!

I couldn't afford Richie's windscreen. I used Talbots because they were on the first Cobea I saw back in '65.

My windscreens are from an 06 Kawasaki 600, $28 on the bay.

If I can't find a cheap way to do it it doesn't get done.

That would be "iffy" for compliance to SCCA Prod regs. See 9.1.5.E.9.a.8.A, GCR p483 in Feb 2026 regs.

I lol at how Prod windshield regs have evolved over the years, and I blame Ginther for these. The original allowance was to "replace" the windshield in open-top cars ("If removed, a replacement windshield must be installed") but the allowance was such that the entire windshield and surrounding frames could be wholly modified, as long as it all exists within the lateral and longitudinal confines of the original windshield. Of course, once the frames have been removed, how is one to determine that...? So, it just became a free-for-all.

I'd guess that bike "windshield" would get additional scrutiny. It would certainly catch my eye (edit: then again, it does not look like you're building an SCCA Prod car there)...plus, I think you'd want the aero advantages of a longer, wider "windscreen"... - GA

QUOTE
Open cars may remove the windshield glass, door window glass, quarter window glass, rear glass, vent glass, as well as its frames/channels and all mounting brackets. Window winding mechanisms can be removed. If removed, a replacement windshield must be installed. The replacement windshield must be fitted within the vertical planes of the front most and rear most elements of the stock windshield and frame. The replacement windshield must not exceed the height or width of the stock windshield and frame. Any portion of the windshield that is in the driver’s line of sight, must be constructed of a clear material. No part of the replacement windshield can be constructed of glass. If the stock windshield frames/channels are retained, a high front roll cage hoop must be utilized, and the stock windshield can be retained or replaced. If replaced, the replacement windshield must be of a polycarbonate material with a minimum thickness of 6mm, be identical in size and curvature to the stock glass windshield, and have a minimum of three vertical inner supports to prevent the windshield from collapsing inward. Inner windshield supports must be a minimum of 0.75” by .125” straps of aluminum. The inner supports must be mounted a minimum of eight inches apart. The rear window can be removed, as well as its frames/channels and mounting brackets.

I have this one on my open topped Ginther windscreen car as well and it works great.

It took a while to find the picture but here is what the original SCCA 914-6's used for a mirror.

I started my race life in the early 70's with the ex Bob Hindson factory 914-6 C/P car.

This picture is shortly after I got the car and I was at a major autox in probably 1972

The windscreen is a black plexi and I had to raise the roll bar to be legal to race it.

Ahhh the memories......
