same goes for the paint stamps on the engine tin. i've been watching a set of videos on you tube put up by "The Questionable Garage". those guys are restoring the EV1 that was recently purchased at an open auction and was in very bad condition having been completely badly treated by the University it was donated to by GM 20+ years ago. they even now have the support of GM and the CEO of GM for the restoration which will be to get the car back into fully operational condition. its fascinating to watch as a restoration exercise. museum standard restoration and preservation. they have conserved every single paint/crayon marking that was discovered on the car body shell dating from its original manufacture. thats the proper way to do it. you preserve the markings and work around them leaving them intact if possible. failing that you reproduce it faithfully copying the marking in the location it was found in. what you are trying to do when you do that is preserve not only the object but also the traces of its construction and the manufacturing techniques that were used to make the original. the front struts on the 914 also had date stamps in white paint on them. identical to the dust shield markings. but i think only if they were the boge struts. i believe the bilstein struts did not have those paint stamps. think a lot of the special editions had bilsteins originally? Jeff Bowlsby would know. |

My 911 dash. I changed the color and it’s covered by the dash pad but I plan to replicate the markings anyway. Just on the dash. The rest of the car is a hot rod and the markings and date codes mean nothing.
