Okay, so I have the Tangerine shift linkage installed at the trans and shiftrod + Tangerine body bushing. The Tangerine alignment tool in place to keep the shifter on the 2nd / 3rd plane, (transmission in second gear/lock in the position, and back to neutral).

Aside from adjusting the spring tension (side to side) or front and back limits on the shift lever, there really isnt any other 'adjustment' you can do. Is that right? I suppose there is limited side to side adjustment of the entire shifter housing via the 3 oval shaped holes there; that's it, right?

I ask because there arent any splines in at the transmission. There aren't any splines at the body bushing. Those connections have counter sunk holes for the cone screws.

So if Im adjusting the shifter at the shifter body, what am I looking to accomplish? Do I want the shifter to have enough side to side tension to naturally center itself on the 2nd and 3rd gear plane?

I've read the instructions several times and it's just not sinking in for some reason. What does the correct setup feel like?

My TKX shifts like a dream, I know I will never get that in a 914. I have a rebuilt trans and all the right parts. Please help me understand how to adjust the linkage to be able to enjoy driving this thing.

So I think it actually helps to learn how to adjust the linkage without any adjustment tools. We do a lot of 911's but its the same as 914's.

Adjust the shifter so its neutral in the 2/3 plane.
Adjust it side to side so it shifts smoothly into the R/1st plane and the 4/5 plane. Just a notch at a time at the shift tunnel.
Use a sharpie to make a mark so you know how much to increase or retract the rod so it has equal distance when you shift forward and back (ex 2/3 plane)

I learned to do it on a quiet street on my first 914 when I was 17. Just two wrenches to adjust the rod in the tunnel until it's right.
