life has been "boring" when it comes to the 914.

for the last month i have been giving this a deeo clean.

my mate who owns this set up has been pulling his mercs out of storage and we have been bringing them up to scratch. ook us 12 months to settle into this new workshop.
and 6 months into this year we have been doing what we wanted to do, work on the cars and drive em.

this one was first off the rank. not really the subject of this post. but i have been getting familiar with how to pull a merc apart and give it a big once over. servicing doors, latches. attending to worn body idtems. etc. its an unrestored 1969 saloon.
in very good shape.

usual merc fuel injection of that time. high pressure mechanical fuel injection, pretty much what they used during WW2 on BF109 fighter planes.

but this is the pleasure that awaits me next, having learned enough not to break, damage or otherwise harm this era of mercs.

1972 CE250 coupe. 1 previous owner from new. 109,000 miles.
my mate picked it up aabout 5-6 years ago. the owner, a well to do lady had passed away at the glorious age of 103 years. what an achievement to live that long in sound body and mind still living in her own home!!!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

of interest to 914 owners. first merc to get D jet EFI. all intact. this is a 1972 so its a couple of years down the road with improvements to the system and its ROW spec not UJSA emissions spec. i always thought it was the first 6 cylinder water cooled installation of D Jet after the VW type 3. launched about 12 months after the VW in 69.
but turns out i was wrong. the opel admiral got the first 6 system i month before the CE250. the opel had bosch ECU 001 and the merc was 002.

the glass detailing is to my eye, exquisite. yet so straight up and common sense at the same time. frameless glass doors shut like a bank vault - same as the more "solid" framed saloon doors. ohhhh. its good.

this car is so intact.has its original tourist delivery plates in the car and royal auto club of the UK country plate. (the car was not purchase locally - instead it was picked up from the factory in stuttgart and taken on a "once in a lifetime" tour around europe for 6 months. then brought home to terra incognito at the bottom of the world.

in the trunk awaited a surprise.
intact untouched medical kit. never seen a merc here with this still in the car.
not even sure if the local delivery cars got it back in those days.

the spare looks original. may not be. have to research the tyre notation etc on it a bit more.

working on these mercs has been eye opening.
from the point of view of getting a glimpse into stuttgart as motor city germany.

i'm beginning to see my 914 with new eyes.
seeing it not so much as a VW of sorts but rather a design product from a city where there folks at the star over the neckar river were getting looked at over the shoulder by the other boys in town just down the road. (or vise versa?)

looking forward to the next month or so carefully tearing into this CE250.

its a good feeling having the 914 parked a few feet away.
both early cars in EFI development.
one the third D jet and the other the second L jet.
