There was a recent listing on BaT for a blue 914 GT Tribute that was only bid up to 70k. Why do you think it didn't go any higher? Its not mine but I'm building one and don't want to make any possible mistakes that this person did. Thanks.

Because it’s a 4 cylinder conversion car and not a real -6 vin

I'm not an expert by any means but I was shocked that $70K wasn't enough to hit Reserve for that one.

If you look at the history chart, on average 1-2 /6 conversions per year go for over $80K. They have to be quite exceptional and timed with a hot market.

Do not build a /6 conversion under the assumption that you'll someday get the investment back.

Don’t ever restore anything and expect to get your money back. It’s always cheaper to buy someone else’s already completed restoration than it is to do it yourself.

Any time we build on spec, we loose money compared to time and materials on a custom order build. On my own cars, I do whatever I want, with no regard for resale. Not because I'm rich, I'm not but because I want my cars the way I want.

That blue bat car is really pretty. It's almost always less expensive to buy someone else's project compared to building your own. Especially if the owner built the car. Non professionals never get paid back for their time.

I built a 914/6 conversion because I needed it to be a legal 2.0
I don’t want to know the money. But guessing original build was 120 with body, paint, rebuilt motor and trans, suspension

Worth 35 probably as a twin plug/6 racecar (conversion car)

Bought a race car last year from a friend. He restored it well with shop involvement, and drove it two years. Paint, body panels, suspension plating, engine/trans rebuilt, new fuel cell, Belts. Data. shocks and all

It could be anything including a limited buyer pool. It’s not like a 911 where that price is mid range. Any time you are near the top of the market, it will be a gamble if there are enough ready, willing and able buyers to support the price.

Sold for $95k in 2021 is meaningless because we don’t know with what “invested”. $100k, $120k, $140k? Combine that with the COVID insanity that escalated all used car prices including hobby cars. There are tons of people that bought used cars in that period that now find themselves underwater as they now look for a new car. Wasn’t unique to hobby cars.

Most of the conversions that move anywhere in that range are big bore 3.6L or similar mods. Not cheap to build a 2.8L either and arguably it has the notoriously unwanted 2.7 mag case but still won’t have positive ROI or everyone would build them and flood the market which would drive selling prices down.

Same story different numbers.
