I've done this several times throughout the years, but for some reason my
rear hub just would not pound off the bearing and even the inner race would
not give up its hold.

But here was my solution to allow a normal puller to finally make the inner race
give way. If you take the shock nut out, there are now two holes to allow a
1/2" steel plate behind the arm to push against. A couple long bolts and a 1"
(soft) round steel bar and you're set for pulling.

Note that the arm and the plate are not perpendicular to the axle hole, so the
bar pushes off to the side and must be soft enough to not damage the splines.

The 1/2" holes are 8" apart. I used bolts 5.5" and 4.5" long, and a piece of
plywood to protect the cable hole area.

You neglected to add that a highly used and patinaed piece of scrap plywood is essential. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)
