From what I see.
The black heater tube pipes are NOT stainless. From What Foley told me. If they are stainless, both inside and outside are stainless. The rear flange is regular steel. If you want, HPh has stainless flanges. Rich |

The SSI ones are truly all stainless. The Dansk ones are only stainless on the outside (I have seen a very compelling demonstration of this).

Foist, oh mighty magnate of the Engineering Dept at Bovine U, you purchase a magnet.....sound familiar.....here are the rules:
1.) If it sticks, it ain't stainless (unless it's cheap 504 series) 2.) If it doesn't stick, it's prolly stainless or plastic. 3.) If you hit it and it makes a "ring" sound it's prolly metal (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) The set you have are iron pipe surrounded by a SS heat exchanger shell (So now you don't have to buy a magnet and learn how to use it). |

actually magnet can be attracted to a high quality stainless...normal conditions would be for 400 series or 300 series if cold worked or machined...... if you have a known steel/iron part, you can do a comparison to see how well the magnet "snaps" to the item |

Brad told me...way back when he was still with SSI...that only the very early SSI's (like mine) had a steel rear flange, plus the weld nuts were steel. By the eighties they were all stainless. |

I belive that early SSIs had mild-steel muffler flanges. This was later changed over to SS, but I don't know when the switch occurred. New SS flanges can be purchased and welded on by someone who knows how to deal with SS.

The metallurgist that lives a street over from me told me that mine would rust...
He works for GE aircraft engines so what does he know.... Said the pipes are a poor grade of stainless... Then again he is full of poo sometimes.... Ken |

Can't be that bad....The teen I got my early SSI's off of was rusted right into the ground. The mild steel flanges were rusted almost right off.
Hot tanked them and TIG'ed new flange's and they looked like new. the wreck they were found on..... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif) Attached image(s) ![]() |

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/agree.gif) early SSI had steel flanges, later models are stainless all the way ... they should clean up nicely! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) Andy |
