I just got done cleaning all my spare joints and I came up with a good set of 4 but I did notice that I had some joints with different size ball bearings and the outer part seemd to be made of different material. The weird part is the broken ones were all of the small bearing type.

I believe the answer is as simple as different batches over the production run. Since the joints are sold as an assembly, with no intention or provision for repair, there was no need to standardize. Same splines, same bolt pattern, same OD, anything else is "free". The Cap'n
