I received a Weltmeister Rear Sway Bar as a donation to my track car project.

It's a used unit and as such has no instructions/templates for the install. Anyone have any pics of theirs in the car and tips to make sure I don't dick it up?

A test fit shows that it may interfere with the shocks at the full-soft setting. Both ends of the bar contact at the adjustable mount. There doesn't seem to be that much room for travel either, though I can shorten the droplinks by about 3/4 inch or so (unless the bar is supposed to ride below the lower shock mount? Seems unlikely, but that's why I'm asking the question, eh?)

A search only gave me a photo of a stock set up which doesn't help. The mounting points are different, but the bar is in the correct position above the lower shock mount.

Many TIA!

I'm on the road and have no axcess to take photos of the install, but, do you have the sway bar oriented correctly? On mine, which could be a different generation of welt than yours, (but likely not) I seem to recall the bar ends had a curve up and away from the long length of the "U" of the bar. I turned mine so the bar ends were as low as they would go when the bar was attached to the underside of the trunk, and the bar ends parallel (sp?) to the ground, and have no rubbing issues.

Yes, a pict would be better. If you don't get any photos by monday, PM me your email and I'll send you a couple snaps, as I have no place to host and post.

I have a Welt bar on the rear of my car. It is set at full soft since I've been fighting oversteer lately. I have adjustable spring perches on my shocks and the bar does not hit anything but it is real close. I don't have any pics and I can't take any till this weekend. If you still need them either bump this thread or PM me.

Well, I got it figured out. The installation was pretty straightforward and went quickly. A second set of hands would have been nice, but wasn't really necessary.

You can see how close the adjustable slider comes to the shock body. I will just have to set the bar a bit stiffer. The fronts are also adjustable and the first AX of the year is next Sunday so I'll be fiddling with each end until I get the car to balance.

You can also see that the Welt bar does not use the same mounting points as a stock bar would. I think the stock bar goes into the outboard plug holes.

Mmmm. Performance parts. Sexy.

Couldnt you shorten the drop link for more clearance?
I havent installed mine yet but just a thought.

Yup, you can. On mine virtually none of the threaded portion is visible. IIRC you want to try to adjust the droplinks to get the ends of the bar as close to parallel to the ground as feasible.

There's evidence on my car of the drop link hitting the trunk floor at some time in its life (with the PO) but I have never noticed this happen since my ownership - I substantially stiffened up the suspension & chassis.

I keep it on full soft but prefer the way the car behaves with it vs. without it. Having front + rear bars also gives you quite a bit of trackside fine-tuning capabilities without having to dick around with spring swapping.

Can you point the droplinks back instead of up? that would give you more clearance to your trunk floor, no?

just a few more pictures.
Like Chris, we shortened the drop links.
Also, our shocks are inverted so presented weird clearance and attachment issues.
but the bar is the same:

We used aluminum shims to give it a bit more rotational clearance,
and aluminum stops:

Where did you guys get the shock mounting bolt? Did you weld on an attachment so the bar could attach to it or where did you get a bolt like that?

I want to make myself something like that...

I just scanned the installation instructions. My good deed for the year. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/lol2.gif)

REAR

http://www.nosubstitute.org/914/Welt_Rear_...nstructions.pdf

FRONT

http://www.nosubstitute.org/914/Welt_Front...nstructions.pdf

I scanned at 300dpi x 8bits and then PDF'ed so the files are a tad large (~1MB) but should print clearly.

Chris and Brant;

Thanks Gentlemen (?) that's exactly what I was looking for.

So as you can see from the attached photo, my drop link also is contacting my trunk floor, but the instructions and Brant's photos show the drop links going below the shock mounts vs. above (as I did and as a stock set up is.) Sure I can shorten them a bit, but they've contacted the floor with just 2 days of spirited street driving. I could only imagine the damage when I AX it. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/blink.gif)

The bar's PO put hose clamps on the bar to operate as the stops. Not nifty aluminum stops like Brant's, but they do the trick. ps: Brant, your shocks and springs are real purty. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wub.gif)

Thanks again. Time to get back under the car to flip the bar! (or just the links, since the bar is in the correct orientation.)

Oh, and Andrew, the lower shock bolt is something that comes with the bar and is specific for the application. Though if you don't have them for the bar I suppose you could easily weld a boss to the end a stock mounting bolt. Depends on your welding skills I suppose? I would think it could work.

Actually I think you do have it installed per the instructions...which will hit the trunk floor.

Some guys have even installed these completely upside down, INSIDE the trunk. I may have a pic of that somewhere.

Thanks Chris;

A closer read of your instructions do show the links above the shock mount bolts.

I wonder if Brant has any issues with them below the mounts? The physics of it seems the same above or below, I'm not an engineer (but I play one on TV.)

I wonder how the hell that would work with them inside the trunk? You'ld have to have slots cut in the trunk floor on both sides. Weird solution to the hitting the trunk floor problem, I would think.

our springs... and specifically spring hats create a space problem for the droplinks to go up.

Hate to dredge up a seriously old thread but I'm looking for a copy of the front weltmeister installation instructions and the link in this thread is dead. Can anybody help? I've read the install instructions on the "bird board", but it would be nice to have the original install info.

Got your PM - I most likely still have those files and will post 'em after work in a couple hours assuming there are where I think. I did shut-down (my) nosubstitute.org site a few years ago but I still have the site files. At one point nosubstitute.com was a porn site so be careful (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)
