I am new to your board. I currently do not own a 914 but have an opportunity to acquire one. I have been doing as much reading as I can about them. I own other classic cars and am aware of the issues about rust and maintenance. I have never driven a 914 so I would like to know what other owners enjoy most about their cars. I would be using the car for Solo II and for driving around town or weekend trips. I realize these cars don't possess gobs of power but when it comes to Solo, a good handling car is better than power monger anyway.

Thanks in advance for your advise.

you gotta drive one to appreciate it......there are many 914 owners that have much faster and powerful cars as well as owning a 914...(I have a 911 with a 3.6, lowered, fat tires, etc...etc....)......9 out of 10 times I'd rather be behind the wheel of my stock 1.8 914 blasting down the road or taking my favorite on-ramp or off-ramp (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/MDB2.gif)

I remember asking Brad Roberts, basically the same question before a Swap Meet one morning....

With all the new(er) technology out there, ie 911's,
Why a 914?

"because they make kick-ass racecars, that's why".
and
"every GREAT racecar from Porsche has been mid-engined".

The answer is to go for a ride in one. There are a couple guys from Regina on the board who might be able to help you out with that if it was warmer out.

If you have read the what to look for threads, it is still a good idea to have someone who knows these cars look at one with you.

BTW welcome (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif)

I know Dan and I have spoken with him about his car. I know when the weather gets better he will get me out for a ride. I would just like to know what it is that makes pwople choose these cars.

For some reasons for the same reason that my 4x4 is a International Scout. They both have a very affordable Cost of entry.

I bought my 914 for $600. Of course I wouldn't be able to comment on the driving aspect of it since, it is in mechanical tear down mode. But I hear they are super fun to drive.

Cost is a big item here..

They are fun to drive around stock.. and they can be easily modified... which in itself is half the fun.. "Ive got this coming, and this, and Im planning on doing this.."

The cars have a 50/50 ballance (mid engine), that with a low center of gravity (low to the ground) allows them to corner like they are on rails or road glue (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

It is a car you drive...turn the wheel and the car goes where it is suppost to.... unlike most cars that you steer and sip coffee in...

I'll be out that way when it warms up and can take you for a cruise in one with a tad more power than Dan has. Just leave the radar gun at work. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

A 350 Chevy? Wow! Certainly more than 80hp there. That will be a good ride. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Actually for driving I prefer my 70 1.7. It handles much better than the V8 car. The V8 car has heavy rear springs which dampen the ride feel......but for ear to ear grins the V8 car wins (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

There is simply something about old air cooled cars, the smell of them, the sound of a horizontally opposed motor, the improbable level of lateral acceleration you can get going around a freeway offramp. I drove a super beetle for about 25 years before I got this car, dimensions are surprisingly close to the same. To me, the ultimate little air cooled car is a 914, low, light, mid engine, and is not subject to the Draconian California smog laws.

Lots of reasons...

It is a purely visceral car. You -feel-, -hear-, and -smell- everything. The car is extreemly agile. With better handling than cars costing even ten times as much. They are very simple, you don't need a computer to repair it. They have cavernous cargo capacity for such a small car. There's nothing quite as nice as top off drivin' in nice weather, the targa top makes the passenger compartment a nice open feel without all the wind from a convertible. And as Brad was quoted, they make GREAT race cars. And yes, all of the trully great race cars from Porsche have been mid-engined.

I've had the great oportunity to drive a veritable host of race cars over the years. From a Honda Civic, to a radically prepared BMW M3, to a production class VW Rabbit, to a Formula Ford race car. They were all great in their own right, but I still got more grins per mile in the teener than anything else I've ever driven. Okay, the M3 was freakin' amazing! But there is no way I can afford that car. And furthermore, I can't take the roof off and enjoy a nice day in that car like I can with the teener...

For most people the 914 is a love-hate relationship. We LOVE the car. But we will often call our prized possesion a piece of (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/post-2-1117899824.gif) for the times that something 30 years old finally gives up the ghost and we have to fix it...

But for all our bellyachin' we still love these cars. You have to drive one to know. But beware, once you do, you're gonna want one...

Simple Hot chicks love old cars. Just check out the hot babes on the Ladies of the 914 club. If that doesn't make you want one nothing will.

Why is that?

driver input and car output is one.....a simple 15mph right hand turn from one street to another can be perfectly executed in the 914 and it'll be the closest feeling to being in a go-kart....

a few things to consider:

there are no simple/cheap bolt-on power increase items....
It's not a Honda......
very limited selection of aftermarkte rims...
It's not a Honda......
finding tune-up or repair items can be tough at times...
It's not a Honda......
it's a 30 year old car that is going to need some love.....
It's not a Honda......
the shifting is not the best (you can buy a better shifter, but it's not cheap).....
It's not a Honda......

you really have to drive one to understand why we love the underpowered and somewhat ugly 914 (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

I enjoy wrenching, and for the most part, it's no harder to work on then a bug. And driving it is Stupid fun! It is the only car I have ever owned that I love more an more the more I drive it. Oh, you also get this great club for a nominal membership fee.
Easily the best car club ever. I posted the same question here and on a BMW 2002 web site at the same time. And I got 10 responces here before the first one over there. And the question was about a 2002. The cars rock, and so do these guys (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer.gif)

I got my first 914 just out of high school (many many years ago)and 5 more sence then. Ive had alot of sports, muscle, and luxury cars. But the 914 is like no other ive owner, i guess an nsx would be close but whos got 95 grand. Like the add says "There is No Substitute". 914's are just about endless in the conversion that can be done in apperance, handling, and power and wont break the bank. I currently own a '75 Cosworth vega (very rare car). trying to get parts for this to improve anything is like next to imposible. but would trade it for another good teener any day. Thats my two cents. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

I am glad you mentioned that because I like the fact that there is a good, loyal following of the cars and good support through the club. The funny thing is, the 2002 was another possibility that I was looking at, or a TVR 2500M. Those would be cool, but parts are likely tougher to come by, especially at a decent price.

You folks are doing a good job of selling me on a 914. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)
