Not wanting to start yet another cup holder thread, but I'm going to . (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

This cup holder was mentioned in another thread here recently. It fits in to the ashtray location on older VW. Well seems there is a bunch of different sizes depending on what type VW you have. I emailed them asking for dimenstion info on the part that slides into the ashtray mount but of course I haven't heard anything back.

The 914 ashtray is 3 3/4 across so If I could ask you to help a fellow 914er out and measure your VW ashtray, please. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/pray.gif)

I know I know, I have used the roll of duct tape, the wedge type cup holder but this looks perfect for the wife & I when we take the 914 out for the long drives / trips. I'm not worried about it being in the way of vent controls, I haven't tuched mine since I got the car 3 years ago other than to turn the fresh air fan on once or twice.

I own a ghia, but its 400 miles away and I think I removed the ashtray.

If you don't get any other responses, I could put a call into my pops and have him measure it for you tonight?

Well, I just so happen to have a Squareback in the garage right next to my 914 so let's take a look...

Nope, won't work with a late model Squareback, measuring in at 3 5/16". Early model Type 3's had a taller ash tray, interchangeable with a Bus (Type 2) I believe. I don't know if a Type 1 ash tray is different from a Type 3 or not (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/unsure.gif)

I tried to swap the ash trays and neither would fit in the other's slot.

Excellent concept (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wub.gif) How does it stay put? Looks like it would slide out under just the right acceleration conditions (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)

Apparently,
Bug/Super Beetle,
Bus,
Karmann Ghia,
Thing &
Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback)
...cars all have different size ashtray slots. You'd think one of those ought to fit a 914 since they share some parts...

I'm going to continue to veer off topic here...I've seen your avatar before thats really cool. I used to have a '71.

There used to be an old car game for playstation that had a cheat code so you could drive a fastback. Pretty cool....

and now back on topic:

itsa914 let me know if you need me to "phone home" and get a measurement for you. I would be happy to do it.

If someone had an extra 914 ashtray & sleeve, we should send it to the cup holder maker. If they offer them for other cars, a good template is probably all they need to add one for us. They’re only 20 bucks or so. Sounds like they’re already set up with the manufacturing.
(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif)
Another thought. - Our ashtray sleeve width may be the same as another car, but the pitch may differ. Our ashtrays kinda pull up and out. The pitch would be good for holding the holder in place. A bugs dash is more flat. Even if the size was correct, that holder would put our cups at an angle.

Through 67 the bug ashtrays are just under 2 7/8", but those early ones were a simple design and different than the 914's. I suspect a 68-on bug would be more similar, but don't have one to measure.

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/idea.gif) doesn't hurt to ask. As for the angle thing, I thought of that but depending on what it is made out of (looks like plastic to me) a little heat gun action could fix.

A super beetle is not even close, like half as wide as a 914 ashtray

I might just buy one and see if I can mount it in the frame work of a old ashtray I have. There are only two rivets that hold the front cover on a 914 ashtray (area in blue circle) so drill those out, rivet holder to ashtray frame and presto, dual cup holder. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

Well that is my plan anyway. May not be pretty, but shold work. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beer.gif)
