Just looking for A/C solutions on the web and typed in "914 A/C Kit"
A link popped up to: http://www.gilmore-enterprises.net/GH/index.htm Their website says they are working on an A/C kit for the 914. When you look at other systems and pictures, they even have a picture and reference to Jake Raby, under the VW Bus section. Just wondering if anyone knows of these guys and what types of solutions they may offer for our cars. How do they compare to the competition? BTW; I'm also looking into Vintage, Hot Rod Air and ICE... Thanks, Jason |

I know Ed @ Gilmore Enterprises really well. A little gruff at times, but a good guy. He's kind of a 'one man band' outfit, but knows what he's doing. I lent him my 914 VPC install manual for reference. His existing systems for Aircooled VW's are great. He had one installed in a Baja Bug he drove daily that blew ice cubes! The 914 kit is still in development. He told me he was doing an all new under dash unit that didn't hang down as far in the passenger side foot well (with a new, modified glove box liner) and would not require you to "cut down" a center console to install it. The actual compressor mount is already done, as he installs the same unit on bay window busses w/type 4 motors. I think the compressor actually resides below the engine sheet metal, so you won't have to hack up the engine shelf. He offered to install a system on my 914 at cost, but I moved away before he got the system finished. I was trying to talk him into doing a condensor that mounted in the rear qtr. panel (ala 911 AC upgrade installs) vs cutting up the front trunk floor. Maybe if enough people express interest, he might go that way. Email him if you're even remotely interested, as he asked me how many 914 owners would really want the AC system when done. Be sure to tell him I sent you. No monetary gain on my part, just trying to help him out.

Thanks Rob.
I sent Gilmore an email last night. Let's see what they say. I too like the idea of mounting the condenser in the wheel well. I just hate the idea of cutting my trunk up. That's what caused me to back out of the dealer installed unit. I actually had all the parts and everyuthing, just coudl not go through with it. For anyone interested, Vintage air sent me a letter that they do not have any products suitable for air-cooled applications. They referred me to ICE. |

I received an email from Ed. He says he has a number of the components finished, but will be a few months before it is ready for sale. Anyone interested, please email him through his website and let him know. He said he would send an email when it is ready.

Wonder if he's going to make a bracket to mount the compressor for all of those -6 conversions.

I also sent them an E-mail expressing interest, I've heard nothing since then. Now that I have the link again ( forgot the name of the company) I'm going to keep looking.

The last time I talked to Ed (several months ago) I think he told me he had the underdash unit, and the compressor mount done. The last bit was the condenser and he was looking for a front trunk pan to finish designing it. Anybody in the Tampa Bay area that has an extra front trunk pan laying around (or parts car with one in it), I'm sure he'd be interested.
It wouldn't hurt if all teeners who are even remotely interested in his AC system gave him a call / email / snail mail, etc. to help push things along. |

I am planning on installing AC in my teener and being from Central Florida I have his website bookmarked. I am not interested in a condensor in the front trunk floor, I think I will use a Porsche 964/993 condensor/fan assy in one of the rear fenders. I am also doing a /6 conversion does anyone know if the traditional AC compressor mount from a 911 will fit in a 914? Any clearance issues with existing 914 hardware? I am assuming the under dash unit will contain the evaporator?

Haven't heard anything re: 914 kit, but the 914-6 conversion mount would interfere with the firewall without hacking out a hole. The same problem was found on the 916s.
Didn't Clay Perrine come up with a 911 compressor mount for a -6 that put the compressor under the stock battery mount, next to the upper valve cover? It ran on a serpentine belt if I remember correctly, and looked quite promising. I have never heard anything else on that conversion, so I am interested how it's working. |

It is on my car and running.
I am going to make a Mark-II bracket that will be more of a bolt on, and hopefully a bit lighter. |

Ok, it is 150 degrees in Atlanta today and I'm still wondering what happened with this kit... Any ideas?
My other A/C project is coming along slowly, but getting some ideas, parts or even a kit is still on the table. |

I am in the process of getting an AC system installed in my car. I bought components from a local hot rod shop. They sell on the internet as SouthernRods.com. Sanden compressor, a remote condensor unit with fan, and a small evaporator for inside. I had a compressor mount from an old parts car which I modified to accept the new Sanden compressor. The evaporator fits nicely under the dash. I fabricated a mount and air duct for the condenser in the front trunk, similar to older aftermarket systems. Biggest problem was running the hoses from the rear to the front. Once I get it working, I will post photos and details. I think the total cost of new components was about $700 or so, but I need to add it up. I need to get it working, since it was 101 degrees here today. Good luck, JoeO
