I got a job offer in Rocket City (a.k.a. Huntsville).

Anyone around that's really familiar with that area?

Ready to get out already?

What kinda job?

Hunstville is a looong way away from my house. 1300 miles. Should be a decent place to live though. Nice in the winter, but a wee bit warm in summer?

I live in Nashville and make it down to Huntsville a few times a year. Nice city; big enough to have everything you need within the city limits, but its also getting big enough to have traffic problems during rush hour.
The city also has the highest nuber of engineers per capita (one out of every twelve people is an engineer). Low crime rate, but high dork factor. Thought about moving there myself if the current job craps out due to Ford's ongoing problems.

Later,
Don

Huntsville is a growing town and should hold lots of opportunities for someone like you Rusty. The Arsenal employs many. Airport is easy to get to and looks great. We go there about once a year for reunion of Red's relatives. I think but am not positive, that the Madison community, part of Huntsville is the best area to buy a home if you take the job.
John Jentz should be chiming in as he lives there or very close. Huntsville area has lots of fishing and hunting too. Huntsville is about 3 hours from Memphis. Probably about the same to Atlanta. I saw a yellow 914 in Athens which is west of Huntsville the last time we went and a red one with a young guy and his girl friend driving by Helen Keller's home in Tuscumbia, which btw, is near Muscle Shoals, a recording mecca for some early 70's music legends. Anyhow, I yelled for him to pull over. Stopped and told him about the 914 places that could be found on the Internet.
Anyhow to stay on subject, I think you might like the place if you take the job.
The roads there are good and the Interstates link you just west of town with lots of places to go. Gulf coast and Mobile is about 2 hours I think. You can honk your horn and maybe Joe Ricard down in Gautier on the Gulf coast will hear.
Near lots of 914 in a 150 mile circle. Some say there are many parts cars in that area that have never been parted.
Wish I had some of the group near me so I could get mine running. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Quite a few 914 locals, if you are working at Rocket City - look up Jon Lowe, he works for the TOW Missle project. He is out of 914s now, but I am sure he would talk to you. Others are in the area, just don't know any of them.

Rocket City has a wonderful, home style German Resturant BTW, it is highly recommened, amlost as good as my Oma's (Grand-mother's) place!

Take care, Stephen Jacobs

I was stationed there 2 years back in 83. I worked for civilains while I was there. Easy 2 years thats for sure. Was a nice town at the time. Lots of tech in that area. Im sure it's grown alot since then. Seems to offer as much as any other big town does. Much more layed back than up here, but that's not necessarily a bad thing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) If your into fishing, has great bass fishing down there. Has the mountians that overlook the town. People down there in general seemed very friendly. If you don't mind heat , humidity, and getting your food at a Piggly Wiggely, seems like it would be a decent place to live. They get occasional tornadoes. There is one 914 member from there, maybe he'll chime in. Good luck with the offer!

Mike, thank you for the bump! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_bump.gif)

The board was attacked not long after I posted. With everything going on over here, I compeletely lost track of this thread.

Thanks to everyone for all the input.

I've decided to accept the job. This job is a military billet... at Redstone Arsenal.

Yeah, Gint... I'm ready to get out, but not yet eligible. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Now I gotta start thinking about shuffling cars and stuff. The winters are supposed to be pretty mild... so 914 driving in January sounds nice!

Cheers,
Rusty (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smoke.gif)

Hey Sorry I did not see this thread until today. I think you will be happy here! I've driven up to Christmas with the top off. The only reral winter is about Jan 15 to March 1. It does get humid, so it can get a little uncomfortable in August. The other people pretty much hit the target with the descriptions. The locals are a funny blend of rednecks and techies- sometimes in the same body even. I guess that happens when the farm you grow up on is near the Suturn IV test stands. Most folks are from elsewhere though. There are a few other teener supporters around, too. Stock 93 is doing a Suby conversion, and Brett W has a race shop where his car lives on jackstands. There is one more I know of through PCA, which is a pretty active group here. When do you PCS?
