What is it?
I punched the throttle on my V8-914 today and noticed that it was shifting strange and wouldn't go into 4th or 5th. Then I heard some rubbing which sounded like my tire rubbing the fender (they are close but generally only rub over bumps). I pulled over and noticed that the engine mount bar was hanging loose on the right side. The bolt was still attached to the body but the nut had come off. I must admit that I didn't look too close to see if it stripped off or just vibrated loose. The reason for this is that coolant (yes I realize that most of you don't know what that is) was running out on the ground. I think a hose just got pulled off when the engine dropped a few inches. Thanks, Jonathan |

Hmm, no answer?
I think it's M12, though it might be M14. Don't recall the thread pitch, but it's probably the "standard" one. I wouldn't get the parts at Orchard, though. I'd either talk to a dealer or your favorite aftermarket parts place, or I'd find a Metric specialty place. (Caterpillar Tractor carries lots of metric stuff.) --DD |

Well, maybe there are no dumb questions, but mine was pretty close. Since I've never owned a stock 914, I wasn't familiar with how the engine mounts work on them. It turns out that on my V8 they bolt the engine mount bar directly to the frame where the stock mounts are.
It looked like my 510 rear suspension with a welded on stud pointing down. However, it was just a bolt going through the mount. In this case a 1/2 coarse thread bolt. It appears that the nut did come loose though it seems strange that it happened just when I punched it. Perhaps the nut stripped out (the bolt was OK) but I never found it. I was able to get the engine bolted back up pretty easily. However, the alternator and water pump belts had come off when the engine dropped. I was finally able to get a water pump belt back on and drive the car home (only about 10 miles). I'm going on a trip to Thailand tomorrow so I'll have to fix the rest when I get back. Jonathan |
