Any one have any tips for making sure a 914 is straight before attempting a Long repair? Something that could be done without motor and trans? Or can point me to a thread to read?

Thanks

-Pete

Up at the top of the page is 914 Info (next to Events Calendar). Click on it and you will find the body gap specs.

Put the car on jack stands and check the gaps. Adjust as required.

Great thanks!

One more thing, which of these would be considered critical indicators? I am guessing the obvious “h”. Any others?

-Pete

PS: Why is there no info on “y”?

"f" is all you need to get a quick idea on how bad it is, providing you know for sure your windshield hoop is not bend.
(and if it is, this will tell you also)

hey, i like quoting myself (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

addon: use f and y to determine if your windshield-hoop is bend.

if not, look at g and see if it is off.

f will tell you if the car is sagging along the longs (f getting bigger)

I must be over looking something, because I can't find any data for the "y" measurment. Anyone know this one?

Thanks

shit, you're right. someone forgot y.
plus, looking closer, it looks like y goes to the pass. side upper pilar. in this case it's useless anyways.

ok, now, you need:

f
g
h
x

where f will really tell you how much the car is sagging on either side.
my f actually shrank 1/4" during weld-in of the roll-cage ...

Actually Andy.. your car didnt shrink. It stayed right where it was. We measured all the cars before and after. The only one that shrank was Julius on one side (the side we didnt put the brace in).

If all measures up, put some braces in the doorgaps.
This will help prevent in- or decresing the distance between the targa bar and the windshiel hoop.

You can build a simple frame that will help the car from sagging as well (supports the car over a larger area than just jack stands)

(IMG:http://www.rennware.com/914/pics/r_long06.jpg)

Now you can hack with conficence (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

cheers,

Jeroen

Jeroen,

Does that frame/brace include something to prop up the back and front of the car? Or should that not really be a concern?

Thanks

Hey Pete,

No, it does not support the front or rear of the car. Just the longs
But if you put doorbraces in it, it'll do just fine

cheers,

actually brad... it did!

spec is 25 1/8 and mine measures right under 25.
top didn't fit anymore, the rubber spacers were sitting on top of the targa bar instead of in their grooves on the lock.
the side-seals were too long (had to cut them) ...

because the longs are completely rusted out on mine?
or, when it was hit, the metal was weakend?
or, tony was holding on to the windshield-hoop while he was brachiating (sp?) around in the car?

Measured between outer corner of roll bar and outer edge of lower hole for hinge.
