Sorry. Newbee here.
My question: does the 1.8 914 have a magnesium block? I am considering buying a ratty 1.8 914 engine to use the heads and P&C for a VW Type 2 1.7 '72 bus. I need to use the bus block and lower end to fit my '72. No access hatch over the engine compartment. I would like to dispose of the excess 914 block at a New Years Eve bonfire. Thanks. Barry sends |

Denied. Although finding a VW type1 case should be fairly easy.
The Type4 is aluminum. B |

There is evidently one very very rare version of the Type IV engine that did have a magnesium case. I have heard that these were only used in industrial applications (e.g., to run a pump or generator or some such) and carried a "V" engine code.
I think that one guy over on the Shoptalk Forums BBS spoke up and said he had seen one. It is unlikely in the extreme that any of us will ever see one... --DD |

The fan shroud is also magnesium.
Rumor is that early VW 411 engines were mag. Mahle Gasburner mags (for 911s and 914-6s) were truly magnesium. |
