Hey all,
While looking for a good engine to put into my V8 conversion I found a place that specializes in LT1 and LS1 engines. I was told before that an LS1 does not fit into a 914, but does anyone know whether an LT1 would fit? Especially if you've done this conversion yourselve or know somebody who has done it please let me know. The project is getting slowly on its way. Bought a 74 roller some weeks ago and I am currently taking off what is still left on the car and assessing the rust spots behind the firewall (no gaping holes). Hopefully it won't be too much of a disaster. Got the chassis stiffening kit already, and the steel GT flares and complete 911SC front suspension should be arriving in a week or two. Looking forward to that. I'm still trying to figure out what rims/tires to use. I like the look of the black-center 930 fuchs but I get the impression that tire selection for 16" rims is kinda limited - especially for wiiiiide tires (245+). Anybody got any ideas for wheels/tires that would fit under GT flares? Johan |

What makes an LT-1 longer? AFAIK, nothing.
The best motor for the conversion PERIOD, is the 375hp 327, it revs happily into the mid 6krpm range, the problem is the transaxle being made of putty. M |

The LT1/LT4 engines are longer because of the cam driven water pump and the reverse flow cooling with the water going to the heads first and the block last, and the ign. mounted on the front of the engine. The throttle body mounted on the front of the intake will also hit the firewall.
The LS1 engine would make a better engine with the cooling easier to use a remote pump with and the crank triggered ign. The intake can be revesred with the trottle body facing the rear. The LS1/LS6 engines will rev to 7k with no problems. |

BK is correct in the configuration of the LT1/LT4. If this is the path you are going to take Lingenfelter/Accel make a 1000cfm intake & top mount throttle body using port injectors, it loves rpm. Check out Lindseyracing.com for custom width & diameter Fuchs. I have recieved a set of 17x10 & they are beautiful!! I have to disagree, the LT1 is just a standard small block with aluminum heads on 93 up. The original LT1 was just a high performance 350 with froged pistons, pink rods, Steel crank, high perf cam, different valve springs and 202 heads. I have seen them in 914's before. The LS1 is a totally different breed of animal. I have heard that the LS1 does not fit in the 914 because it is longer. I think the person to ask would be Scott from Renegade Hybrids. That is what they do and would know exactly what will and wont fit.

That firewall? That thing they put there so you could make a V-12 fit if you have a hammer?
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) All the stuff that goes on the front goes on the side, with space to breathe. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) How thick is the backpad, and what notch do you park your seat in? M |

I know that I was told by Scott at Renegade that the LS1 was too long and not good value for the money. Still is an awesome engine though in LS6 form.
LS6/914 Does your name imply you put an LS6 into a 914? Or that you own two cars, one of which is a 914 and the other you are too embarrased to admit to. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) |

Ha ha.. I also recall when ScottM told us a LS1 wouldnt fit in a 911 (until the guy in Houston showed up on the boards with a Ls1 powered 911..
Anyway.. The guy in Houston supposedly has a 914 with a LS1 in it currently.. not sure if he is done with it... but... B |

The original LT1 was just a high performance 350 with froged pistons, pink rods, Steel crank, high perf cam, different valve springs and 202 heads. That is correct.
The later LT1 is a different block than the orgianl LT1 and not all Lt1 have alum. heads the engines used with the 9C1 option and station wagons had steel heads The LS1 engine is shorter than the SBC by .25 inch and has the same bore centers. There are people now using this engine in 914's. I'm looking for a LS1/LS6 engine now for a 914 V8 conversion. These engines have gotten so popular for SBC replacements that the price of a used LS1/LS6'S has increased in the last 6 months. I saw one this weekend mounted in a first generation Mazda RX7 with no mods to the hood. |

Anyone have any knowledge of a LS6/Z06 engine going in to a Boxster? I can't be the first person to think of it. I know the dimensions of the LS6 but I'm unsure the size of the Boxster engine. At the very worst you might have to lose the soft top.
It actually seems like a better match to me than putting it in a 914. So can anyone tell me either: [a] it can't be done (which just means it hasn't been done yet) or [b] here's a website, magazine article, etc. |

Hatfield has me looking for a cheap Boxster right now to do a V8 conversion in. The first engine we discussed was the Z06 engine. So far.. I have figured out that we will not lose the top.. just the pacakage tray area above the stock engine.
We will probably use a BoxsterS 6 speed box. B |

However, I do not own a Boxter or a LS1/LS6. I still think a Chev V8 will be the hot ticket for the early Boxters. Rick |

Brad, do you know who the guy in Houston is with the 911 LS1. I live in Houston myself so that would be an excellent contact.
I had heard from a fellow 914-V8'er here in town that the LT1 intake could be a problem. I'll check out the link LS6/914 sent and I'll also check with Renegade. There are indeed quite a couple of LT1 versions around. Only Vettes/Camaros/Transams had alu heads. Only the Vette had 4 bolt block, others 2 bolts. I'm sure there are more variations but fortunately there is a lot of reference material on the web. Does anybody know someone with an LT1 in a 914? Nothing beats first hand experience ... |

all pontiac ws-6 LT-1's ie: trans ams and firehawks had aluminum heads . the comment that the waterpump will hit the firewall is correct .
solution ,change waterpump. my ws-6 firehawk was totaly reliable and driveable in any weather and any traffic . the same could not be said of my wifes LT-1 corvette. radiator position and air flow is critical w/the LT-1. my 68 gmc pu with the 302 out of an early z-28, bone stock revs to 7k develops 305hp , 292 tq and gets 16 mpg at 60 mph . what more do you need for a teener (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) |

I'm 6' 3" and I think I won't fit in the car any more if I move the firewall foreward. Out of curiosity, how much extra space do you need to create for that 928 engine? |

All,
I've measured the gen I SBC, LS1, and SBF. The LS1 from the bellhousing mounting surface forward to the water pump mounting surface is 1/16" shorter than the gen I SBC. The SBF is 3/8" longer for that same measurement. With the LS!/LS6 being aluminum, it's quite a bit lighter than the gen I SBC. Andy |

I don't remember off the top of my head but It's something less than 4". |
