Ok, so my '76 2.0 that I've been working on forever is now once again calling my attention, now that I'm back from college for the summer.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

Last summer, we painted it and made it all pretty, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif) but that's not too important when it wont go anywhere to begin with.

So when I took it out to try and figure out my phantom 4th gear problem (another thread i'll start when this one is resolved (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) ) I noticed it had no (and I mean none at all (IMG:style_emoticons/default/yellowsleep[1].gif) ) power when I was mashing the gas in 2nd and 3rd gears. And going up hill was barely possible, I kept it floored and it 'surged' on and off (several seconds on then several off) up the hill at an average speed of about 5mph. But I had to leave for school and then it started when I came back.

I took the car out a week ago (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving-girl.gif) , it seemed to pull really well (though maybe not as warm as before) and only stuttered a little at like 4500 rpm. The idle is still a bit wacky (sometimes at 2000, other times at 1000-1100). And I noticed that if I blip the trottle, it will jump up to 3000 or so real quick, then slowly ( 2+ seconds) return to idle. I checked for vacuum leaks and everything "looks" alright. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I noticed if I disconnected the vacuum hose from the base of the throttle body 'platform' that leads over to the... well I dont know what it is (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) (silver, about the size of a peanut butter jar with vacuum, fuel?, and computer hookup) that when it was plugged at the throttle body, the engine revved up and down at regular speed. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

Ok, enough writing. I'm no where near a 914 expert, but I am an engineering student and I'll be damned if I cant fix this. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

Start with the basics

First off, make sure your points, plugs, wires, distributor cap, and condensor are all new, and set to spec.

This will eliminate alot of questions going forward.
Dont assume, check and replace all the old parts.
Points last less than a year of normal driving in these cars.

Next up will be the FI system.
Replace all vacuum lines with new ones (Pelican Parts has them, or AA)

From there we need to step back.
Buy two books.
Get the Haynes Manual for the 914, its a repair manual.
Get the 914 Tech tips book from AA

And finally read this site to follow along in the troubleshooting process for the FI system.

Well after posting, I got back out there and checked vacuum lines. The line going onto the MPS was a little stretched out, so I clipped off the end and its nice and snug now. That seemed to fix the problem, or the majority of it. I just took it for a spin around the block down and up hills at normal speed and it seemed to have it's power back. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

As for the ignition, I just replaced the coil, and the cap and such looks like it's ok, nothing chewed up or anything, but I'll check again to make sure so I have all the ponies my little engine will put out.

And I do have the Haynes Manual, so that tells me what to do after the 914-brainiacs in here tell me what's wrong.

I have yet to get out and turn a wheel in anger and get it real hot and fast cause I just put in new tie rods and the steering and all feels like a newborn trying to stand up, so I'll get that aligned and go crank out some hotlaps and see what the engine has to say about that. thanks

Maybe part of the problem is that you have fuel lines, electrical connections and vacuum lines going to a peanut butter jar!

A pertronix is one of the all electrical/computer type units right? What all does that replace (distributor, coil, what?)

As for my avatar, soon enough, soon enough

Alright, well I looked at the points and cap and located the condenser and took some pics, I dont really know what to look for (but at least there were no obvious 'well there's your problem' destroyed components.

I went around today and drove the car around town a little (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) and got it really warm, and it seems its still having problems when I open up the throttle, it just bogs down (IMG:style_emoticons/default/yellowsleep[1].gif) . The same deal around 3000 rpm when it just goes nowhere (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) . So maybe I'm back to square one (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Do you know how to adjust ignition points? Read that part of the manual and do so. Step 2 will follow...

Those points look worn out... toss em and get a pertronix or crane points replacement.
From the pic the cam block looks like it s gone. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

No more help from me until I see a bigger avatar pic. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chairfall.gif)

As for the avatar pic, my Girlfriend is going to be out here for the next week and I'll get some good (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif) pics of her and my 914.

As for the pertronix, how much do they usually run and is it hard to install or that doesnt matter because its a night and day improvement?

I also noticed when it was hot and sluggish, the more gas I gave it, the worse it got, then I let up on the gas until it responded again. just more info to figure this out.

once again: (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

Check the timing and check the point gap (or go Pertroix $100, easy to install, usually a good improvement).

I'm strongly considering Pertronix now, and I'm finding it for about $80 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/type.gif) . I dont have a lot of money, but it sounds like its definately worth it.

Any one know of a better deal on the Pertronix Ignitor (like $60 or something)?

Just get new points and adjust them properly and see if that helps before you spend 80 bucks on the pertronics.

Pertronix are worth it, but I have to agreee that it will just put another variable in the problem. Try points, and if it fixes the prob, get a pertronix when you have the $.
