Straight GL5 gear oil, usually a multi-viscosity type (i.e., 80-90-140).

NOT GL4, Not some universal refill crap, just GL5. The Cap'n

About two and a half quarts, IIRC. Rather less than the gallon bottle of Swepco 201 (which is what I recommend and what I use).

Nothing but SWEPCO for me. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumb3d.gif)

And I'd trust the Cap'n, sorry Britt.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) listen to the Cap'n first, then go and buy a gallon of SWEPCO ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

but seriously, i had very good results with SWEPCO, it's in my tranny right now, and it'll be in there again after the next flush ...

Ditto the swepco. It works better than synthetic. 901's love it.
I put redline synthetic in my WRX, I've regretted it ever since. I just got some swepco to replace it.

Sorry, you're wrong. RTFM! Why post if you don't know the answer? Might wanna take a look at the specs book, an owners manual, or the factory shop manual. Porsche style synchros NEED GL5. NO ADDITIVES, ESPECIALLY MoSO2! VW style (like American and Japanese cars) have brass synchros and cannot use GL5.

5.5 pints, BTW. The Cap'n

Now that the transaxle fluid question has been answered I'm curious to know how all the transaxle fluid leaked out if you were just changing the shifter bushings (the external nylon/delrin beasts, right?). Something tells me there's probably a lesson in there somewhere...

(IMG:http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q44/sendjonathanmail/5-27-07shifterbushings014.jpg)
was kinda difficult to get them on otherwise....what happened next, i didnt see coming (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) .....o well, needed a flush anyway (i suppose)...
cleaned it up, and put it back on...

Oh not really on topic but see the rod bushing on the last photo? Anyone have one of those loosen at the housing? I used a peice of shrink tube to tighten up the fit. Just thought I'd throw that out.

That's what I'm running in my 930 box. I'm told by Bobby Hart (at CA Motorports...a real expert with tons of knowledge rebuilding & modifying Porsche transaxles) that Swepco 201 is perfect for the old school Porsche gearboxes (901, 915, and 930). The G50 series gearboxes are a different story. Seems to be a consensus building here...
