After searching, I found that some used 3/8 butyl tape and others use 1/4"
What is the right one? I would assume that if it's too small, there will be gaps and if too big, the glass might move and stick out too far |

I don't think "right one" applies here. I can tell you that I used the 3/8" and it worked perfectly. Unless you found someone who said they used 1/4" and it *didn't* work, you're probably fine with either. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I just used 1/4. It seals, but there was room, especially on the sides. If I did it again, I buy 5/16 or 3/8. If you pull on it, it narrows down where needed.

Skip Butyl, go with silicon adhesive... Comes in a squeezy bottle from home depot. Works great, clean the excess with a razor blade and you're set!

Silicon absorbs water. Water+914=Rust. Not a good thing. Plus, if you use silicone, paint will never stick to it again. Or so I've been told. YMMV. |

The guy at the glass shop warned me of that. He said when it gets hot the glass can come loose. He says it's marginal using butyl on the rear and illegal to use on a front glass these days. I didn't use the butyl He gave me a product called Sika Tack Cool along with primers for the paint and the glass. The stuff is in a caulk tube and VERY stiff and almost the consistancy of the butyl. My hands hurt trying to get it out of the tube but it worked great. I may have the opposite problem....I may never get the glass out again! Thanks for the responses |

I used the 3/8 3M stuff and it worked great and lasted. Prep the area clean and take your time installing it. It can be kind of a mess if the cord gets caught on you, or if you apply the window to the wrong spot.

It would be cool to have the glass removable for when the top is down. My yellow Beater has weld spots from the PO and it was a heated one. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)
