After some bulb replacemts all the lights have been working fine on my '73 1.7. Then today my license plate lights and dash lights don't illuminate. The turn signal indicators, oil, brake, alt, and bright indicator work fine, just not the lights for the gauges. Checked the bulbs and fuses, what is the next step? Would the license and gauge lighting be connected?

I don't have my electrical diagrams in front of me so I can't tell you.
Do your running lights work? 1st stop when pulling out the light switch. As for the dash lights, try rotating /jiggling the headlight switch as you pull it out to turn them on .... the switch can go bad internally and fuchin' with it will sometimes get a response. |

Running lights work normally except for license lights. No luck jiggling the switch. I would check my connections to the swith but can't see how to get to it behind the dash. Do you have to remove the fuse block to get back there?

Do you have to remove the fuse block to get back there? Unscrew the knob, then remove the escutcheon plate that threads into the dash face and you can remove the switch from the back. The fuse block does not need to be removed. |

The license lights are on a separate circuit from the taillights. The same circuit also powers the rear trunk light and the instrument lights.
Using a test light, pull fuse #7. Then with the headlight switch in the park light position, see if the test light comes on on one side of the fuse. If it does, clean the fuse contacts and replace the fuse. IF it doesn't, then you have to pull the headlight switch and replace it. If the fuse blows, it means you have a short you need to track down. |

Yup! Goes to show just because a fuse looks OK, doesn't necessarily mean it is. Lights back on. Thanks for the help.
