I've actually seen designs very similar to this before. You never know if it was totally ripped off or if they had the same idea.

I saw Randy Beck running a hood like that with the POC back in '98 and it was old then. Bill Bartee had a similar hood at around the same time. Beck later modified his so drastically that there almost wasn't any hood left, it was all just a huge scoop.

Most likely if you have an idea for something, somebody else usually does too. As stated above this design was out earlier. Some people are probably thinking you ripped them off.

If I do a Subie in my car, the radiator will vent out the hood. It is one of three possibilities, and aerodynamically the best solution. I've seen at least a dozen 914s with hood vents. The similarity in shape is inevitable if you are trying to avoid cutting the bracing on a steel hood.

Venting through the hood has been used since at least the 60's, it's hardly an original idea. I've seen it used on V8 914's since the 80's and I'm sure someone did it before then.

If I apply four-wheel steering to a 914 I can hardly say I invented anything unless I apply some form of new and unique innovation to the pre-existing concept. If you designed the hood so it incorporated some kind of unique venturi effect that had not previously existed, then patented it, and someone copied it, then you'd have a case. Coming up with a completely new concept in airflow management is no easy task. Just about everything has been tried.

They might have seen your version and decided to copy it, but that's kind of like saying you painted your car saturn green and then complaining because someone else liked it and painted theirs the same color.

I've been runnning a metal venting 914 hood for about 8 years
even running it in club racing.

I know I took the idea from seeing it used on race cars and not actually having the original idea

I've had that setup for a long time. I've camouflaged it by running the numbers down onto it, but if you look, you can still see it.

I've also seen some 914s from S-CAR-GO with the same molded hood setup.

I saw stuff like that in Bob Farnham's shop in the mid-80s. He was located right next to Otto's, and did a LOT of 914 body styling. Remember the "California Speedster" (maybe it was the "Monterey Speedster")? His place was called "Beach Boys' Racing". They did the flares on Gwen's 914 (GTEENER).

I had assumed, maybe wrongly, that Otto (John) had bought Beach Boys Racing. Is that not the case?

That's kinda cool... I was just playing with a scan from the hood off of a Shelby Series 1, and was trying to integrate it into the front of my 3d 914 model.
