You're right of course, I was thinking of the handle surrounds/backing which are black plastic on the later model cars.

I believe that part can be found on the 1971-74 VW Karmann Ghias. They are around. You can also find nice reproduction chrome trim pieces.
house of Ghia has them PN#64-66 for the split handle and 64-67 for the trim.
