Hey guys,
A friend of mine recently sent me some pictures of a six that his friend purchased. The seller purchased the car used in '72. One thing about the pics that was interesting/different was the 'Porsche' script on the rocker panels. Coincidentally I saw an eBay ad today for an old (early '90s) magazine article highlighting the sixes, and one of the examples in their spread had the same script. I've done enough reading at this point to come to my own conclusion that this wasn't a factory option, but I was wondering if anyone knew if this was a dealer option and if so how common is it? This isn't the first time I've seen it, just the first time I've really paid attention. Thanks, Reid |

Thanks George. What I was asking though was, was this done at the dealership? If so was it common? Or was this a DIY thing in the day?

many dealers used the vw of america Porsche 914 option list to make some extra money decorating the cars before delivery. Even an extra 50 bucks was more profit to them back then, so indeed many dealers would have installed these stripes on the rocker panels or on the side of the body

that color is however an original extra cost option! Very few of those early cars were painted gold metallic!

That car also has the rare "lug nut delete" option! You are correct George - that was a $300 option (imagine that). Most people hate that color, not me. Interesting to see that the side stripes were mounted on the rocker covers. Most that I have seen, including my 72, were body mounted. Doesn't matter, because the were an OPTION. Pat |

Pat I doubt there was any kind of template for placement; it's almost like the dealer body shop guys just applied the decal where they thought it should go. Both of the nearly new cars my brother bought back in the '70s (he was second owner on both) had this option; his 72 had it body mounted - the 74 on the rockers. m. |

The ABS Plastic Rockers with PORSCHE Embossed in them
are aftermarket.. I had a brand new set, never mounted on a car that I brought to Hershey last year and I ended up giving them away so I wouldn’t have to drag them home. I had them marked for 50.00 and no interest. They were bought by mistake from a vendor here and it wasn’t worth the cost to ship them back.. |

I've read that the positive stripes were always a dealer option, and that they were always a vw part number, where the negative stripes had Porsche part numbers, but possibly some had vw numbers - but that all were installed at dealerships.
I think I've only seen positive stripes put on rocker panels. It's hard to tell if negative stripes are taller; it seems like they are. |

Here is an LE. Correct me if I'm wrong. The factory stripes wrap around the fender well. The aftermarket ones stop before the lip. Material can also be an issue. This LE has the sunflower yellow stripe. The 2 aftermarket sets that he has do not match, it has a hint of orange in it. Factory stripes were more translucent. Yes the car is 46 years old with the original stripes. The wheels, rockers and bumpers have been repainted in the correct factory color. He has gotten samples of vinyl that are more translucent and has found a perfect match.
