it's the plate on the bottom of the sump on 73+ cars that came with factory installed oil temp gauges. all engines have the spot for them, but the plates with the temp sender were for console (or, rarely, combo guages in the cluster) with oil temp... which started in 73... |

There you go. That "plate" is for an optional temperature sensor for use with a console gauge. The sensor goes in the hole in the plate. It's most often referred to as a "taco plate".
