The stock 17mm master cylinders are NLA. 19mm MCs are running about $235. Automotion has a 23mm MC that's only $110. It says it's for 914s with upgraded calipers, but I'm wondering about using it with stock brakes. Anyone have any experience with these? There is no clue about whether it is ATE so I suspect not and so I also wonder about longevity.

How strong are your legs? You'll lose all that leverage moving to a bigger MC. I wouldn't do larger than a 19mm unit - even with big/humungo brakes.
The 23mm units are mercedes MC's and you might have to dimple your A-arm cross member to get it to fit. |

Thanks, Travis. That's about what I expected to hear, but at that price difference it always makes you wonder if it should be considered. Anybody got experience with these URO MCs? My son has been pretty adamant that ATE is the only way to go.

I have a 23mm master cylinder with Boxster calipers. I had the 944 turbo calipers with it, and it made for some really hard pedal pressures. It also made it really hard to modulate the brakes on the track. When I went with the Boxster calipers, I almost went back to a 19mm master cylinder, but I decided to wait. I like the brake feel with the 23mm master cylinder and the Boxster calipers. It is easy to modulate, and it stops extremely well.
With the 944 turbo calipers, Betty described my brakes as "70s Chrysler over boosted power brakes". I hesitate to think what it would be like with stock calipers......... But definitely not a good idea. |

What properties does a 23mm master cylinder have that makes it an "upgrade"? Increased pedal pressure requirements? Reduced ability to modulate the brake system with differences in your input? Cheaper? As for the sub-hundred dollar 19mm master cylinder, they're made in China, and are likely no better made than the fuel pumps AA sells. The difference here is a bad fuel pump means your car won't go. A bad master cylinder means your car won't STOP! You do the math.

Thanks gang. I figured I'd stay with a 19mm ATE, but it's always good to know why it's the right choice.
