So I want to get a fresh block and rebuild a 2270 street engine. I have always loved the look of horizontal fans and would really like to integrate this into the build.

I have seen a few, (even an electric one) but which would be recommended? Would it be worth looking into building a 90 degree coupling? (or would it be too power sapping) - I have access to lots of billet and machinery, so If anyone has done such a thing I would be very interested to see what you have done.

Anybody running a HF in a Fourteener? Would love to see pics if so.

Thanks in advance.

This car I'm keeping as a four, it's too good and original to be rippig the four out for a six. This is my first 914, don't worry a Six or a six conversion is somewhere in the future, but this one is a keeper and I really want to keep it a.) Narrow b.) 4-cyl.

Chris uses a modifed Corvair horizontal fan.
Search on the internet for the Corvair fan setup.

Check the two or three German tuners that specialize in type4 motors. (look at tunacans type 4 secrets links page) and you should find a setup that is still being sold.

If you want to make it yourself, look for a 90 degree industrial gearbox...McMaster Carr and MSC have them.

Not that I have thought about this.....(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

My mate in Southern germany had one on his 2.4. he did not recommend it at all, belts did not last long. After a year or so he sold it and went to an upright fan system... My 2.4 will be started soon not sure if the original fan is good enough...

I wonder if the Corvair type belts are special, i.e. designed to flex in multiple planes, as opposed to normal V-belts. My John Deere "mule drive" takes the horizontal shaft output and converts the motion to vertical drive for the mower deck. I always buy belts for it at the JD dealer, because I tried a generic auto parts store belt once and it didn't last long.

Later Corvairs were modified so there was an adjuster with spring tension on the belts rather than just a rigid adjuster. That was the end of thrown belts.

Flat=direct air flow, vertical=indirect air flow, so what physical reason could explain why a well-designed flat cooling system with horizontal fan would cool any less efficiently than a well-designed vertical fan and shroud? Talking about cooling efficiency, not drive loss.

Again, talk to Chris Foley...he seems to have figured out the trick to keeping belts.

Porsche used the horizontal fans on most of the big motors in the race cars...might be something to that.

I have never seen the spring tension type and I have the later 65-69 style set up.

The trick to keeping the belts from flying off is actually to have them at the correct tension. Most people over tighten them and that is what results in slipping and tossing. I get my belts from a corvair parts only yard (you can get them from Clarks, Opus, etc.). I cna take a look at the belt and see if it is a particular type.

I thought Porsche used aircraft quality bevel gears to drive those vertical fans... at the RPMs they ran, a belt would have been a weak link. Really cool stuff but way too spendy for a street car.

Correct. Driven directly from the center of the crankshaft.
