More V8 Newbie stuff, Fuel pump Options

How is your pump mounted?. Here is mine, a Holley. It sounds like a coffee grinder, doesn't have the 3 second shutoff feature of the stock pump, and is louder than the engine itself @ idle.

do you need an electric pump??? if a carb, you could just go back to the block mounted Chevy fuel pump....

Howard I've got the same holley pump and have mine mounted in the front trunk. When I first installed it with the band mount like you have it was LOUD!! I made a mount that used the bolts on the bottom of the pump with some rubber cushions. Now its just loud. I can't hear it with the motor running. I've been thinking about changing the pump to some kind of rotary fuel pump, these are much queiter.

You need to use a electric fuel pump. The water pump or alternater takes up the space that the fuel pump uses in the stock location.

I had the Carter elect pump mounted in the same place with rubber isolators and it was still real loud. I considered changing to the Facet pump that just clicks and shuts off when pressure is reached. That way at idle or at a stoplight the pump would be quiet and loud only when you are cruising or at WOT. I don't know if it flowed enough though.
I ended up changing the fuel system to the Holley Projection and I have not driven it yet, so I don't know how loud it is gonna be. I can't imagine it would be louder than what I had before.
The good news is you will get used to it, but it is just a drag explaining to every new passenger what that loud noise is.

Howard, I have used Mallory, Carter & Holley pumps depending on the cfm requirements. The quietest I have used are Mallory used with a electronic pump voltage controller that will vary the voltage to the pump. MSD & Aeromotive both make pump controllers. I fabricate brackets with isolator bushings to dampen the pump vibration. Lar.

Your pump is real quiet. It is wrapped in rubber and is mounted in two clamps that where rubberized.

I typically mount that pump on two stock 914 rubber mounts.

Do you have insulating material behind your interior back pad? I ran my car without the stock rubber mat for a while and was really surprised at how many noises were muffled after reinstalling it.

My carter electric pump is mounted in the same location as yours. I can just hear the pump while at idle with quiet mufflers (Borlas). Any forward speed at all and the pump noise is gone. Running my 40 series Flowmasters drowns out the fuel pump noise.

I'm going to give the rubber isolators (as recommended by carter to reduce noise) a try one of these days.

Hi guys!
This will be multi part rather than download 3 pic's together.

Verrrry interesting. Not sure if you can tell from this pic, but installer built a whole new flat firewall. Picture the indentations behind the seats on the stock setup..they are gone. Advantage is more room in engine compart for the alternator and external water pump(it's much easier to work on than the 4).

But it's just flat steel. Hit it and it sounds like a Jamaican steel band!! And besides the noise, lost about 4 inches in seat adjustment. I know 4 inches doesn't sound like much (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) but could use the extra leg room. Will either beat it to death or get thinner seats and something to deaden the sound. Good call.

I can't imagine why PO replaced firewall with flat plate. There is plenty of room with stock setup using a RH kit.

Was the whole drivetrain moved back 1-3/4"? Check rear transaxle mounts......there should be a spacer plate that relocated drivetrain toward rear.

It may have been done as some sort of rust repair. I doubt you'll have any luck pounding it out with a hammer. If you replaced interior upholstered panel with carpet, would this gain you space to move seat back? I've seen this done on a couple of cars and the results looked pretty good.

I've got the rubber needed for my fuel pump.......just need to do it. Thanks for the offer.

Have done more reading on this and some early Renegade conversions apparently did 'adjust' firewall. Looks like the only thing close is water pump, and mounting was fixed on later ones to avoid this. Doesn't seem that suspension/tranny was relocated. Will get in touch with Renegade and learn more.

FW is already carpeted; no back panel. Only place in interferes with seat adjustment is very top of seat back. Any suggestions on firewall sound deadening/insulation material?

I was not aware early RH kits required firewall modifications......learn something new everyday.

The piece used to move drivetrain back looks similar to the rubber isolator you provided picture of. It's only made of metal, about 3" long x 3/4" thick and has two holes about 2" apart. If your looking at moving your drivetrain back this amount (provided the early RH kit did not use this piece), I would imagine you need a new forward motor mount as well. I'd post a picture of mine for clarity but am having computer problems.........self inflicted : ) Call Scott at RH for the absolute correct answer here if your considering this move.

I did a search using "sound deadening" and found a bunch of info.
