My eBay saved search for 911 Bosch distributors yielded this hit today:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...em=270333808506 Googling for DIS6 led me here: http://www.compu-tronix.com/ A little Googling for the company name yielded a hit on the Samba classifieds for a 4-cylinder version: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=643993 Hmmm... $74.99 for four cylinder version, $549.99 for the 6-cylinder version. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) Is it just another solid state ignition system? Scam? Real deal? |

You're talking about two totally different things. The Samba ad is for their Compu-tronix equivalent of the Compufire or Pertronix hall effect points replacement. It uses your existing coil, wires, etc., and all it is is a little electronic module that fits where your points were and a new rotor with a magnet. The DIS4 and DIS6 are full replacement ignition systems, with new individual coils and wires. They include a replacement "cap" for your distributor that has the hall effect module built in, but all it does is trigger the direct ignition coils, so the high tension wires go only from the coils directly to the plugs instead of from the distributor. That way you get a huge high voltage spark to the plugs because you have more dwell time, a full 720 degrees of engine rotation, between the times that each of the four (or six) coils have to fire.
The guy at Compu-tronix is AJ Sims, famous in VW circles for hugely fast Kadron carbureted cars. A VERY good guy. It looks like the DIS6 is a copy of the Compufire DIS-X direct ignition system, which my kids and I have run for years. Great stuff, no scam. |
