Why not publish the classifieds as an RSS feed. That way I can subscribe to the classifieds via my favorite RSS news reader and see new items pop up more conveniently than always having to come to the site and checking.
RSS 2.0 or something. It's pretty easy, when a new ad comes in write out a new static file in RSS format and provide a link in the classifieds section. It's read only so there can be no abuse. |

Brad,
I'm familiar with email notification. RSS is a way to syndicate your classifieds. So, for example, if someone has a news reader they can aggregate porsche classifieds. It's a publish/subscribe type mechanism. Rather than having a scattered set of emails you always see the RSS syndicated ads in one place too. Also, with email notification you have to be a member. With syndication you don't and thus can increase exposure yet another way. One benefit is another site could subscribe to your classifieds RSS feed and potentially drive traffic to the 914world.com site. I would like to subscribe to the RSS feed and while I am browsing my RSS subscriptions I can see the all the ads with the pictures and all depending on the RSS format that is used. Right now, I have a news reader that I subscribe to many web site feeds so I can at a glance see such things as yahoo news, slashdot, new york times, etc. If I see an interesting article I click the link and to to their site. It's an non competing mechanism with email notification allow another way to get at data from this site while promoting it. I don't know if you know about RSS but it is going to be more common in the future and I thought it would be great if this site would be an early adopter. Another benefit to RSS feeds is your potential audience can increase. Other web sites could subscribe to your feeds and drive traffic to the club. Goto www.bloglines.com and check out that site. It's a web based RSS aggregator. A well known site, Craiglist offers RSS feeds of all their listings and I subscribe to the job ones. I instantly get to see all the new jobs that are posted and click through on interesting ones. Keep it in mind to the future anyway. |
