I hope someone can lend some light on this...

I am at the point to buy the motor. (Missed out on budmans motor.)

So, which one to buy?

Options:

EJ20 G

About 240hp, coil on plug. I think this has smaller turbo, so, should spool faster. On our small cars, this may not matter much.

Ej20 K

About 280Hp, center mounted coil (dual) and uses wasted spark. I think this has larger turbo. Not sure. I have been using wikipedia for a resource, and there is not a whole lot of detail.

As near as I can tell, I will need to get an external ignitor for either of these. Can someone jump in and clear this up?

I appreaciate any help on this.

Be sure to add up all the costs before deciding what to buy.
For instance, when you get the engine you're likely looking at doing some PM before you ever run it - things like timing belt and water pump change (at a minimum). If any of the belt idlers are rough you'll need those too. A few gaskets, possibly a t-belt cover or two if they're damaged. All that "small" stuff adds up fast! On top of that, you may find most all the rubber hoses hard as a rock and needing replacement - and generally unavailable from US sources (IAC, emission and oil cooler hoses). Lots of short little multiple-elbow pieces not easy to find a convenient replacement for.

I think Outfront has motors with all (or most?) of this maintenance stuff already done, plus tested good compression and overall check-out. Already being in CA - I'd talk with them first to see what they have that is comparable. You might have to source the trans separately, but that'll be much less to ship.
