1.7L still running terribly, $1800 and a month in the shop yields a barely drivable teener Options

rough running
stalls at idle
backfires
0-50 takes several minutes (notice I didn't say 60 - can't hit that)
strong smell of raw gas

all speaks to at least one cylinder not firing

No visible signs of leaking fuel.
2 new injectors don't seem to have helped
Trigger and Ignition points replaced
Ignition wires checked and rechecked
Timing was supposedly set, but will check myself when I get home.

Why is this thing so cranky?

So I had the chance to drive her back up to Autobahn this morning and the mechanic comes out, listens to her, reaches into engine bay to tinker a little here and there, then applies some pressure to #4 injector. Suddenly, she smooths out and purrs like I haven't heard in awhile. He gently wiggles injector and you can see/hear difference. It's one of the remaining old ones that tested fine, but in use, it's not so great. We'll get that replaced and see if she's a long term driver. Whatever he did, made her drivable all the way down to Framingham - was even able to accelerate into ticketable speeds on the Pike and blow the raindrops off the windshield.
