As my friend Dave Pateman has researched: "The 914/6 Karmann badge does not include the body # as does the 914/4 badge. It does include the paint code of the style that Porsche used on the 911 in 1970 & 1971. Whereas the 911 badge used 4 numeric digits and a character to designate the colour and manufacturer, the 914/6 used two digits only up until 9141430400 or so. After that it used the 914/4 VW paint codes.
"The body #'s on the 914/6 are similar to the 911 body #'s and quite unlike the 914/4 body #'s. The form is 1xyzzzz except that in 1970 Karmann screwed up and omitted the 'y'. The 'x' is always 3 for the 914/6 and probably represents a Karmann built 914/6 body as opposed the the 911 using 0, 1, & 2 for coupe, targa & Karmann built. The 'y' represents the year 0 for 1970 etcetera. The last four digits are just sequential #'s as the bodies were welded up and painted. The bodies were numbered before painting, and one would typically expect sequential numbers to be painted in the same colour. In 1970 the body number was stamped into the rear trunk floor in front of the trunk lock. In following years it was stamped in the right rear corner of the trunk floor. It is not known if the change in location was exactly linked to the year code change in the body #. It is known that at least one 1970 VIN got a 1971 body #. It appears that all the 916's got very late 1971 914/6 bodies as we all know The dash #'s on the 914/6 followed the same form as the body numbers, however they always included the year digit. In early production the dash number and body number were not synchronized, but by the end of 1970 model year production they did match, and it appeared to remain matching." That is about all I know the numbers really did not tell the week and date as the fours do and obviously your door jamb sticker is missing!!!! I need, for documentation purposes, to figure out production month of 1970 914-6 .... VIN .....1945....... Can anyone out there tell me??? Many thanks Paul |
