Background:
Car is 1976, and has not been driven for many years (don't ask). The engine is now a 1.7 from 1970. I have replaced all hoses, fuel lines and fuel pump.

Problem:
The engine will start, run for a few minutes then stop however when the engine is running the fuel pressure is ZERO! Activating the fuel pump by pressing the relay in the engine compartment with my finger brings the fuel pressure up to 28psi and stalls the engine.

The car will NOT then restart. When trying to restart I CANNOT always hear the fuel pump run. The fuel presure is 28psi though.

Aim:
To get the engine running as it should.

I've taken the tank out and checked the fuel lines. They were indeed connected up incorrectly. I have now swithced them over.

However the car will not now start.

I'm thinking there may be still more than one problem here. Let's go things a step at a time.

Question - On the fuel tank there are two hose connections. Is the front or the rear one for the tube to the fuel pump? I can't seem to see the answer in Haynes manual.

Andy, I can have an answer later today as I am headed for the shop ... I want to say the forward one is the supply, but I can't really remember. If you disconnect the lines at the engine firewall, the one that pours a steady stream of fuel is the supply ... the other will still drain but not as great as volume.

Have you had someone watch the relay as you turn the key to the start position? If the relay "pulls in" and makes the fuel pump run, the circuit is good. If it doesn't make the fuel pump run for 2 seconds, the fault may be in the ECU or the FI harness.

As a TEMPORARY check, run a wire from the + fuel pump connection to the switched power connection on the fuse box and the other to ground. Fuel pump connections are marked + & -. This way the fuel pump will run when the key is in the "run" position.

The other thing I need to look at to be sure, it the manner in which the hoses are hooked to the fuel pressure regulator. In the video, your FPR is installed 180 degrees opposite factory. I can't remember if the fuel comes in from the rail to the center or side port. If it's hooked up backwards, nothing will will work. I guess you could disconnect the return fuel line on the passenger side, put it in a container and trigger the pump to see if you have return fuel flow.

Oooops ... you have a '76 so it's a single in single out mounted under the fuel tank.
