What information can be pulled form a VIN number?
Is it possible to tell what displacement engine the car originally had? 4702902691 I know the second 2 numbers tell it was a 1970 MY |

4702902691 47 == 914-4 0 == 1970 model year 29 == Karmann plant 02691 == Series number within the 1970 model year. That's all the information that's in there. You can pay PCNA (Porsche Cars North America) a C-note or it might be more now for a "Certificate of Authenticity". It will probably tell you the original engine number, but I'm not sure if all of them do. And the certificates are transcribed from hand-written notes and often enough have errors, particularly in the option codes associated with a particular VIN. ...Then again, as a 1970 914-4, we know that this would originally have come with a W-code 1.7 liter engine with D-jetronic fuel injection. --DD |
