I'm trying to find out if there is an external size difference in engines.

Does anyone know

I can second that.
on my original 6, the original 1970 2.0 motor mounting bracket bolted right up to my 1995 3.6l engine currently install.

25 years, and still the same basic dimensions and bolt patterns.
