I recently finished rebuilding my engine and I am ready for the break in. Today, I went outside and quickly tried to start it for the first time. I only tried for a very short amount of time. I got a couple of backfires (with flames!) out the exhaust. It really sounded like a timing issue. It could be a carb issue but I figured I better get this straighten out first- so here is my question.
When rebuilding an 050 distributor- which way is the rotor supposed to point in relation to the drive flange? Does the dizzy in the picture have the correct flange orientation? ![]() |

Your drive flange is in the correct position...it only goes on one way. When the #1 piston is at the top of it's compression stroke (NOT THE EXHAUST STROKE !!) the driveshaft for the distributor should be lined up in such a way that the slot is approx. 12 Degrees CCW from straight up and down when you look into the hole, and the large segment will be on the right....orient your distributor to fit that way and the rotor should be pointed at #1......This may be as clear as mud, but the best way I could put it............Jerry
