I looked at my first 914 yesterday. Now I'm not new to the 914, having followed them since they were new. But never owned one. This one was rust free, and at around $4000, I thought it might be nice. I guess my idea of nice and his is a bit different. I was, am, looking for a runner to fix up and play around with, but this was too much for the average back yard wrench. It rode nice, hard, but had a Bursche ??? muffler which was LOUD, and probably toast. If I were to buy it, I would have to have taken the entire car apart and cleaned/updated/buffed everything on the car to make it nice. It's just me, I guess I'm anal when it comes to cars, they have to be fine. And if I sell one, you can bet it's in better shape then when I bought it. That would have cost about $2-3000 dollars. It neede a complete paint job, seats, bumper rubber. I have been out of this (914) market for a while, but from what I see, the really good examples have really gone up in value. I;'ll keep looking for the right car and I'm in no rush. To those who have nice examples, keep them going and you're in the drivers seat.

I'll echo the "all due respect" and say that 914 prices mentioned herein and paint job prices herein seem to be from a past decade (or two). Sounds like you're looking for a $10,000 914 for $4,000. Times have changed.

Times have changed. Yes times have changed. Now, name one person on this board who would not like a $10,000 914 for $4000. I did not say all I had was $4k to spend. But I've been in the collector car market longer than some of you have been on the planet. Most, not all, but most people think they have gods gift to humanity in THEIR car. It's the best, rarest, rust free, most optioned, etc car that was ever made. It might be a $4000 car and they're asking $10,000 for it. In their minds it's worth it. From what I've seen so far, its far from reality. WHEN I see a $10,000 914, it will probably be worth it, because I know what a great car is and how it should be presented. I might not know everything about 914, but I've been following this and other boards for quite some time. I don't want crap and I won't buy crap. If it has rust, I dont want it. Engine work, nope. I'm going to keep looking for the car I want for the price I'll pay. They're out there. PS, my buddy owns a paint shop, so my prices are much less than retail. Now, after all of that, I'll get back to looking. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) Perhaps I am naive, but if I were a successful classic car trader, and I was looking for a specific model, I would not post on that model's most popular website that everyone here overvalues their cars. If I were such a successful buyer/seller of cars, I might not want to alienate an entire group of people by naming my thread "Looked at my 1st 914, wow, disapointted." Even if you spelled disapointted correctly, it does not sway the masses here that our cars are overvalued. These cars have been under-valued for years, and those of us who were lucky enough to appreciate them when they weren't popular now have classics on their hands. I will never sell mine, but if I had to, it would be to someone here who would appreciate it, not some JO like you, looking down your nose at our cars while still wanting in on the game. |

Well bigkensteele, you really have me wrong. 1. I never said I was a "successful classic car trader", only that I've been in the car hobby for a long time. 2. I NEVER said "everyone HERE overvalues their cars". That was meant for the entire collector car hobby. Almost everyone I met over the years THINKS their cars are worth more, nothing wrong with that. (for example, look at the rare 914 S for sale tread) As my title said, yes, spelled wrong, I was dissapointed with what I saw. I'm just getting back into this mark, and I was expecting something else. I had no idea they had gone up so much. I hope you never sell your car, but to call me a " JO, looking down my nose at all of you", is unwarrented. You seem to imply that "the game" is closed to anyone else now, sorry about that". When I find a car, with some members here helping me, I'll be glad to stand on the sidelines rooting for the rest. I've done that with all the cars I've owned. I always sell them better then when I bought them, and I'm not a flipper. I like all cars. |

Well bigkensteele, you really have me wrong. My apologies. I guess I read you the wrong way. I hope you find a nice car that works for you. I have owned a 911, a couple of BMWs, and recently drove my buddy's Maserati. All great cars, but none of them have ever plastered a grin on my face the way the 914 does when I am out in it. Good luck. |
