It seems the past week or so, when I go to click my shortcut favorites to the site, it takes a lot longer for the site to load...

Other aspects of the site seem slower, like opening pages, posting responses, etc.

It does this at home and at work...

Hmmmm...

Hey,

I don't mind doing some linux admin here and there. Do you get a free WCC registration? Free Track time? Free Used brake pads?

It was english, but only just - here is some translation:

cron - handy program that makes stuff happen at regular time intervals. If you want to back stuff up every night - cron "makes it so". It's free, and very good.

apache - webserver that just about everyone uses. Free. Very good.

php - handy language for building web pages. Free. Very good. Allows the bbs to grab the posts out of the database and display them - politics and all.

DB - I think it's mysql that is behind the board - Free. Very good. Think microsoft access, but without the graphic shit, and reliable enough that several people can use it at one (unlike access).

Tables - each table is sort of like an excel sheet with rows and fields.

Indexes - Say you have a phone book. Kind of a pain in the ass if it was in random order right? Would take a long time for you (or a copmputer) to check each entry trying to find john doe. An index is just like sorting the phone book - or an index in a book - it allows the machine to go almost directly to the data that it is looking for.

Basically - most databases can be made a lot faster by adding a couple of indexes to them, it's just a matter of figuring which lookups are taking the most time. This thing is actually pretty fast given the volume of data we have, so it's likely to be an involved process to make it fast. A lot of systems though you can get huge wins for 10 minutes work. Which makes you look like hot shit with the client, which often helps grease the skids with the billing rate.
