Hi all
this may be a better topic for the Paddock, but thought I would start here. Many of you have cut a hole in your front hood to allow for fueling without opening the hood. I REALLY need this on Papa Smurf for racing. So...can you show me pictures and tell me what you used/bought and where you got it to do this conversion? TIA! |

This is not a hard thing to do for a cell. Never did it for a stock 914 tank.
Bought everything from FuelSafe when I ordered the cell. Did this on a 356A outlaw with a custom fuel cell. When I ordered the filler-plate, I also ordered a neck extension and a rain/overflow collar with a drain hose. My pix are at home and not available for several days... I'll post the fabrication/installation pix when I get there. 1. Measure where to cut the hole. 2. Measure it again and cut the hole. 3. Measure the angle to weld on the cap socket, taking into account the cap handle if it has one. 4. Weld it onto the extension. 5. Cut the filler-plate hole and mock up the extension with the cap on. I held mine in place (in the filler-plate) with BIG magnets after cutting the hole. 6. Weld or braze the extension into place and mount the overflow collar/drain. 7. Prime and paint the assembly and bolt it on. 8. Go racing. I had the cell built with a valved purge tank just in case he ever wanted to run with FI and gave him the valves to keep with the car. Took a day Frankly I want to do this for my car too, but the extension will be about 12-14in long and has to be integrated into the hood outlet for support at the top. It'll be more complicated if I want to install a locking cap... tempting on a street car but a PITA. I'd like to just modify a cap and weld it to the bottom of the extension, then put another cap on the top. That would almost be trivial. |
