In the process of cleaning and repacking the cv joints. Everything went together well but when it comes to replacing the (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) retaining clip on the axle, I can't get the joint far enough on the axle to reinstall the thick retaining ring. So, do I replace with a conventional clip (with plier holes/thiner) or leave the joint to "float" without clips??

The way I've done it is to hammer the clip against the joint itself, pushing the assembly back until the clip engages the slot. Just use an appropriately sized socket.
