The 914 owners manual reccos a thinner oil in our hot weather - 5-30 IIRC - look for Montoya's post of an owners manual on here if you don't have a manual.
Also, synthetic will lack the old school oil additives, so you may want to look at something formulated for 1950's-70's classic/vintage cars. |

There are some thread that says original manual oil recommendation is no longer applicable with the kind of oil being sold out there.
